Guns of August

Saturday - Sunday, July 31st - August 1st, 2004

with finals on Monday, August 2nd

Marriott's Hunt Valley Inn, Hunt Valley, MD

Welcome to the third Guns of August mini-con which features dedicated play of GMT's Paths of Glory in Campaign Game format. Not actually part of WBC proper, Guns of August is a sort of opening skirmish for those who can't get enough of a good thing.

WBC attendees have long lamented the many conflicts between their favorite games at WBC. With the growing popularity of the card-driven games it is becoming increasingly difficult to avoid conflicts for fans of the genre. So many games, so little time ... Since so many of our attendees have large investments in travel costs to attend WBC, there has always been a certain element which wanted a longer convention so that they could get more bang for their travel buck while increasing the number of events they can play. The problem with this is how to scratch this itch without infringing on those for whom a longer convention is just out of the question.

Our solution was to select two Century offerings for early play which shared a similar game system with long playing times that could benefit from uninterrupted swiss-style play without outside distractions. The first is Paths of Glory which will start at 9 AM Saturday and end the next evening for the bulk of the field. Four semi-finalists will continue to vicariously slog through Flander's fields on Monday. The remaining players are invited to join in our second pre-con CDW event: Hannibal; Rome vs Carthage which will begin on Monday and conclude Tuesday evening as WBC proper gets underway.

Play at Guns of August requires a separate registration fee of $20 for BPA members pre-registered by July 24th, 2004, or $30 for all others, payable to the BPA, 1541 Redfield Rd, Bel Air, MD 21015. This fee can be paid separately or in addition to other WBC fees noted on the WBC pre-registration form.

WBC special room rates at the Hunt Valley Inn apply to all days of the pre-con. See http://www.boardgamers.org/hotel.htm
