2006 WBC Team Tournament
July 25, 2006

Final Teams are in the starting gate, ready to run in less than a week. Last-minute entries have swelled the competition to 78. Entry deadline was July 22. Rules are simple. Teams must have four members. All must be pre-registered to attend WBC and each must indicate a different tournament for his/her team game. Entry is free. No substitutions may be made after the entry deadline or at the convention. Entries shown in red have not yet pre-registered and must do so by the deadline or they will be scratched. Below are the odds of each team taking home the plaque. Will it be your team?

Self-Service Scoring: To improve the speed with which the standings are updated, Team Member, whether they score a point or not, should post their point totals on the Team Tournament kiosk Standings Board as soon as they are known. The Point Schedule is listed on page 7 of your program. While those standings will be unofficial and subject to verification, they will allow attendees to gain a current sense of where they are in the standings as the week unfolds. Since the results of some events are not known until the very end (and later) of the convention, the official scoring will be done the following week and posted here. The winning team will receive a plaque at the 2007 convention.

Handicapper Commentary—July 20, 2006

HAPPY HANDICAP OF 48

With only two days to go, we’re still missing from our roll call some likely suspects for top team honors this year, but the defending champions have fielded a team worthy of carrying on their torch. In fact, some may argue they are even stronger than last year’s championship squad with their new fourth man, secret weapon and PBeM champ Steve Mecay, after jettisoning their top scorer from 2005. What ingrates! Will fate punish them and who will Ron Fedin lead to victory this year? However, the odds-on favorite are the Band of Fools, who continue to dominate their particular niche of gaming (now, if only they would stop trying to defeat each other in their team events…).

The Handicapper’s former teammate has put together the best all-women team yet to be fielded in the history of the Team Tournament. Gents, don’t play soft ball with these Wonder Women! (Well, okay, ladies, if you dress the part, it’ll be hard to concentrate!) Still, they face tough competition and rank only 30th of the 48 teams thus far submitted.

Birnbaum and his three stiffs are again ranked highly, coming off another excellent year of gaming. The Baby Seals could seize the Yellow Jersey this year, if Jason can finally hit his team event (oh wait, that’s always tough with us gunning for him…). Our illustrious convention director continues to keep together We Ain’t Dead Yet, but the gaggle of Sinigaglios had a bad year last year, so the coach had better improve his pep talk. If the Reservoir Dogs can figure out who’ll win Dune this year, they are a threat (wait, don’t they all end up in its final together—I see wheels within wheels).

St. Paul’s Rejects have recruited a new fourth man. The Killer B’s are the former Late Great Grenadiers, with significant hitting power in their new fourth man. In contrast, MVGA’s fourth man, seems to have gained the chair through nepotism.

New teams with “rare” chances include the Natty Bohemians, Counter Clipper Corps, Gaming Speed Bumps, Prepare to Die, Belligerent and Numerous, and my personal favorite: Ringers (at 700-1, they may be the hot play of the whole group; then again, the “kid factor” only works in multiplayer games).

And what’s this? Ben Knight’s team name has been infringed upon by The Boarding Party (formerly Team Apocalyse)—ah well, you snooze, you lose. Come on teams, sign up—the deadline fast approaches. Don’t you want to see the odds for Settlers of Pasadena sink to 10,000 to 1? It could well happen by post-time if we get another 40 teams with seasoned players. And of course, we’re still awaiting the appearance of the Manly Men. I’ll give them preliminary odds of 16-1 in a 49-team field.

Hope to see you there. And if you still need a guy to carry the Hannibal baton for your team, my respectable Baton Rating of 40 (more than the Peck of Pickled Peppers combined) is available for the right price. All right, any price…I’m begging.

Handicapper Commentary—July 8, 2006

Aaaand they’re heaaaading innnnto the gate …

Try as they may, even entering a team early doesn’t make the PeckofPicckledPeppers a favorite, though at least they can once say they had odds as low as 64-1. Hidden behind those very long odds for the Settlers of Pasadena is a true shill--an expert at our craft who has been writing about these games for years and finally makes an appearance on the East Coast. Good luck to the migrants, but heed Greeley’s advice, if you want to find easy competition: you won’t find it in Lancaster this year.

In fact, for the first time in a long time, the team tournament smells like a repeat champion is in the air. That’s a longshot call in itself, but I sense some teams have been recruiting and training talent all year--it’ll be interesting to see how some of the new blood helps the old hands find new ways to score points. I’m impressed with the lineup of All the King’s Men (last year’s Three Lumber Barons & Keith--I guess Keith’s wood necessitated a new name). Never count out any of the Greenville Mafia teams. We haven’t yet seen who the
Manly Men will field, but if anybody has an answer to the card sharks Nest of Spies of last year, it may be them. Can Team X score in Wilderness War and seize another crown?

Have the Beach Bums come of age? And where oh where have our Teen Girl Squad gone? Has sunny California corrupted their cleanup hitter?

Come on teams, line ’em up. We have 19 reporting as of early July. This month will soon be colliding with our beloved convention. I’ll be reporting in again in mid-July. Until then, I think you all know there are plenty of ringers out there to recruit.
