Odds for 101 Teams by Stuart "The Happy Handicapper" Tucker [July 26].It's Post Time. And there's the bell: they're off and running. Thank you, all, for entering in sufficient numbers (a record 101 teams) to push the odds of our long-shot S.W.A.T. to 10,000 to 1. And to push our favorite Nest of Spies to a mere 20-1 shot. I see that the Omens field has scared off the Nest of Spies from trying to score points in Hannibal. Wise decision (showing why they are the thinking man's team to beat). For those attending Omens, I'll see you in six days. Signing off, this has been your Happy Handicapper, Stuart Tucker.
The usual word of warning to those teams whose members
are listed in red below: if you're
not pre-registered by July 25th, you're outa the running. There's
no walk-ons in the Team Tournament.
Self-Service Scoring: To improve the speed with which the standings are updated, Team Member, whether they score a point or not, should post their point totals on the Team Tournament kiosk Standings Board as soon as they are known. The Point Schedule is listed in the printed program. Those who score points in an event they have never won will receive one bonus point. While the self-service scoring is unofficial and subject to verification, it allows attendees to gain a current sense of where they are in the standings as the week unfolds. Since the results of some events are not known until the very end (and later) of the convention, the official scoring will be done the following week and posted here. The winning team will receive a plaque at the 2009 convention.

Stretch Drive by Stuart "The
Happy Handicapper" Tucker[July 25]. And, DOOOOWWWNNNN the Stretch they come. The field bunches up coming off the turn. From the back charging hard are strong contenders Fields of Glory and St Paul's Rejects. Can the Nest of Spies hold on? We have a new record field of 94 contenders lengthening the odds of the favorite to 19-1—and pushing the odds of the long shots to astronomical heights. Even the M.I.A. have shown up. This should be the toughest August ever for the Champagne Room Gamers in their pursuit of their elusive goal. The Handicapper himself is looking forward to trying once more for that rare Sand that keeps slipping through his hands. Get your bets in fast, folks. It is Post Time and the bell closing down the field is about to ring. See you in a few days!
Handicapper's Latest Line by Stuart "The
Happy Handicapper" Tucker[July 24]. Stop the presses, re-jigger the odds: in a major development, underdog
S.W.A.T. has dropped their anchor runner, their linchpin, their ... now the
handicapper must scratch his head to give as realistic a probability as
possible. Okay, we could say they have NO chance of winning the team tournament, but
those kind of odds might be enough to get the Mob involved in rigging the
games for profit. So, we'll tender a shaky 8400-1.
Good to see the Eastern Pa teams returning with new blood--provides a
little company for the long-shots. We have also a number of spouse teams
entering--let's see if they've learned anything from their home game life. The
skeptical handicapper will be happy to be proven wrong.
In legal developments, I understand that the Jersey Gaming Commission is
holding hearings on the StuRat's Pack team name regarding trademark
infringement. This Happy Handicapper had the nice High School experience of having his
graduation announcements misprinted by the printer way back when. I'm sure
I can dig up hundreds of those little minicards from my keepsake drawer with
the name "Sturat" emgraved in gold. And to be sure, this mustang runs in
herds, not packs.. ;-)=
Handicap Update by Stuart "The
Happy Handicapper" Tucker[July 22]. It's good to see teams scrambling to put together improved foursomes. Recent entries include some "known quantities" shuffling a few members in search of that elusive team chemistry that will win it all. A strong Team X enters again. The Glorious CABS Ladies are saying that they have game. "Die"ing Chits seem to be multiplying. The graduating teen element is coming of age, with a competitive Next Gen entry. And we have a new "favored challenger" in the second ranked slot: Champagne Room Gamers comes back with a strong new fourth, rated a 22-1 favorite to win it all and helping to lengthen the odds of the favored Nest of Spies, now at 16-1 (and the long shot S.W.A.T., now at 7800-1). Gee, if we keep pushing this field of teams to new records each year, I may start running out of zeros for the long shots. ;-)= The usual word of warning to those teams whose members
are listed in red below: if you're
not pre-registered by July 25th, you're outa the running. There's
no walk-ons in the Team Tournament.
Handicap Update by Stuart "The
Happy Handicapper" Tucker[July 20]. It is good to see that the Greenville and Quebec clans continue to field
growing numbers of teams. We also have an encouraging number of young adult
teams. Of course, the top ranks continue to house the familiar teams of
yesteryear--albeit somewhat renamed in the case of the former All the King's
Jesters. Nest of Spies is the strong favorite with the Band of Fools the likely
runnerup. The lower ranks are populated by a fair number of one- or
two-horse teams with suspect fillers. We still await teams with heavy hitters like
Reiff, Packwood, Field, and Gutermuth to jostle the odds and ranks. And I
shudder if those named four got together on one team; the result might just be
the formula to knock off the Nest of Spies. Fortunately for the rest of the
field, the odds of that happening are even longer than the odds for S.W.A.T. The usual word of warning to those teams whose members
are listed in red below: if you're
not pre-registered by July 25th, you're outa the running. There's
no walk-ons in the Team Tournament.
Early Handicap by Stuart "The
Happy Handicapper" Tucker [July 12]. Aaaaand, theeeyyyre outta da gate, wid Da Boys taking the early
lead, with Me & 3 Stiffs hanging tight, flanked by The Old
Guard, MIT SGS, Central FL Gamers, and Koleszar Lientz Plat ...
with S.W.A.T. bringin up da rear.
No, this isn't a horse race, but rather the early call on the
Odds for registered Teams. All of the top 10 current favorites
certainly have a chance of winning it all in the Team Tournament
this year, but this commentator is watching the Tote Board and
waiting to go to the Betting Window, because the inside scoop
is that the Nest of Spies is darn near unbeatable having established
a formula for success that makes them the Team of the Decade.
Yes, you heard it here first. They have revenge on their mind
and their Power Rating of 462 Points is a very strong reason to
expect them to hang together and register again as THE unit to
beat.
Despite some back grumbling from other columnists, the facts
remain that this Happy Handicapper labeled 24 out of last year's
top 25 teams as having better odds than the number of teams entered
(that is to say they were the favorites to do well). Only one
surprise long shot crept into the top 25 (and that team will have
significantly improved odds this year with the Power Rating Points
it earned in the last campaign).
In case your are wondering who to recruit, let me say that
of those gamers that did not play for a team last year, the ones
with the best Baton Rating for your team are: Michael Sincavage
(95), Phil Rennert (76), Andy Gardner (72), William Rohrbeck (67),
and George Seary (65). The mighty Finn of 2008 has been snatched
up already by Go Flank Yourself. Many eyes will be upon Riku to
see if he can stop the Nest again in 2009.
If you are looking to steal a team member (assuming that neither
the Nest of Spies, nor the Champagne Room Gamers, nor The
Defectors are breaking up), then you might try to steal: Steve
Packwood (124), Arthur Field (100), Rob Beyma (86), Dave Metzger
(81) or Andy Latto (71). But I sense that families will stick together, and top-rated
players will hang with their buddies. I'm betting that nobody
figures out how to beat the Nest of Spies' formula for success.
We'll check in again on registrations later in the month. Go
ahead, surprise me, make my day, defect and ruffle some feathers.
Play Texas Hold 'Em for team members if you must, but somebody
please break up the Nest of Spies dynasty!!!
With all due respect to the very competitive St. Paul's Rejects—I just don't see a repeat in the cards for them with John Pack
missing his first WBC this year, though they would certainly be
among the favorites between the early bird teams already registered
below. The usual word of warning to those teams whose members
are listed in red below: if you're
not pre-registered by July 25th, you're outa the running. There's
no walk-ons in the Team Tournament.
