In a very close race, the team of Four Random Dudes edged out the Department of Agriculture and the Harry B’s by one point as the bonus point for winning a new event gave Four Random Dudes 19 points for a one point win. Department of Agriculture finished second with 18 points, winning the tiebreak against the Harry B’s as they more than doubled the amount of opponents of the B’s. The 21st ranked team at 57-1 odds brought an end to the three-peat attempt of the powerhouse #1 team and brought peace back to the Galaxy.
Department of Agriculture finished second with 18 points, winning the tiebreak against the Harry B’s as they more than doubled the amount of opponents of the B’s. Dice Loving Canucks – Team Comfy managed to place 4th while 160-1 longshot Sgt. Pepper’s rounded out the top five.
Longshots had a good year as two teams ranked in the last twelve teams by our handicap managed to join Sgt. Pepper’s in the top ten with 70th ranked Los Lobos Locos in sixth and 72nd ranked Two off the Top in ninth. The highest over achievement by any team went to the 80th ranked and 100-1 odds team of the Wrecking Crew who managed to finish 14th.
Only the Harry B’s got scores from each member of the team. Five of our twenty-five top finishers had scores from only one member; Dice Loving Canucks – Team Boys, Two Off The Top, Lion in Winter, The Carlisle Conspiracy, and Desert Rats.
The highest ranking team to get blanked was The Procrastinators who came in ranked 38th. The Train Conductors managed to just miss repeating this honor as our new convention director managed 2 points (against the odds of the handicapper) to keep his team from being blanked for a second straight year.
Scoring was down again as only 7.5% of our field (25 entrants) managed to successfully call their shot. Cliff Ackman proved to be the best as his win in Ticket to Ride, the largest event earned him 12 points with his bonus for winning TTR the first time. Close behind Cliff for individual performance were Andrew Drummond with 11 points for Splendor, Henry Allen for 11 points for Carcassonne, and Derek Glenn for 11 points for Terraforming Mars.
Ten of the top 21 teams managed to make the top ten but the rest of the top ten were teams ranked from 53 to 70 which would normally cause havoc in the bracket busting contest. This year’s contest however was extremely close as eight individuals (Trish Wolff, Sean McCulloch, Sam Wolff, Nick Page, Eric Freeman, Andrew Freeman, and Bruce Reiff) picked 5 of the 10 teams. In the end, however, only one individual managed to pick 6 of our top ten teams. Top honor as the best of the bracket busters goes to Randy Buehler who earned his 2018 Sustaining membership with six correct picks.
