Harry B’s defector Bruce Reiff was carried to the team championship by his new teammates as Jeff Mullet and Trella Bromley lead their team to victory in the 28th annual team tournament. The Western PA Social Club managed 19 points to an easy win. Congratulations to Trella Bromley, Jeff Mullet, Tom McCorry, and Bruce Reiff on their win.
The young guns of Hold on to yer butts managed two firsts from Karl Henning and Dave Meyaard for 16 points but it was not enough to catch the Social Club. Three teams ranked between 26 and 41 rounded out the Top Five as Dice Loving Canucks - Alphas finished third with 15, School of Sharks in fourth with 14 points, and Lions of Winter FIRE with 13 points managed fifth, due to tiebreakers.
The Top Ten saw five of the top six teams along with five teams ranked between 20 and 52 by our handicapper. The Siegelmen finished 6th with 13 points, Top ranked Harry B's finished 7th despite predictions by our handicapper of not making the top 10 with 13 points, fifty-second ranked and 140-1 odds T.O.E.S. finished 8th with 12 points, Nest of Spies finished 9th with 12 points, and ACTS Whisperers rounded out the top 10 with 11 points.
The Harry B’s once again got scores from each member of the team. They were joined this year by The Flying Circus, The Siegelmen, School of Sharks, and Nest of Spies and each of these teams finished in the top Eleven of the tournament. Six of our twenty-five top finishers had scores from only one member; Only on the Weekends, Naps are Underrated, Gang Greene, Tean Delaware, Ghost Division, and MIT SGS.
The team that defied the odds was 64th ranked and 220-1 odds The Procrastinators who climbed 49 spots to finish 15th after earning the worst performance in last year's tournament. The highest ranking team to get blanked in 2018 was no Maly who took their 13 rank from the handicapper and manged to score zero points and finish 70th. Of the top ten ranked teams, only 9th ranked Uncivil Servants failed to make the top Twenty-Five.
Scoring was slightly down again as only 7.4% of our field (21 entrants) managed to successfully call their shot. Keith Dent proved to be the best as his win in Terraforming Mars, earned him 11 points with his bonus for winning TFR the first time. Close behind Keith for individual performance was Nora Frank with 10 points for Titan the Arena.
Five of the top 6 teams managed to make the Top Ten in the team tournament but the 52nd ranked team T.O.E.S., led by Bracket Bustin’ champion Ryan Feathers win in Terra Mystica, proved to be the difference in this year’s competition to predict the top ten team tournament finishers. In a very tight race, with many of the 42 entrants riding the top teams, Ryan Feathers, Eric Freeman and Derek Glenn all successfully picked 7 of the top 10 teams with another 10 entrants correctly predicting 6 of the teams in the top 10. The difference in the final ranking was Ryan successfully predicting Western PA Social Club to win granting him the tiebreaker over Alex and Derek. Ryan, who proved you should always bet on your own team, took advantage of his win by being the only entrant to pick T.O.E.S. in the top 10. Congratulations to Ryan on earning his 2019 Sustaining membership.
