2019 Tournament Format  Swiss Elim

This year teams must play six games per heat. At the end of the first heat, the top two teams with the best record will advance to the playoffs. In subsequent heats, the top two teams that did not win a heat will advance. Note, this is a change from previous years. Runners-up in earlier heats may continue to compete to win a latter heat. (Heat winners may also continue to play to improve playoff seeding.) The two teams with the best overall record not in the playoffs will advance as Wild Cards. Teams will be seeded by Heat record (win percentage). If teams are tied in a heat, the team with the most wins becomes the higher seed. An 8-0 team gets a higher seed than a 6-0 team. If more than two teams are tied for a qualifying spot in an individual heat, see the Tiebreakers in the Playoffs section below. Winners of each heat will get the top three seeds in the playoffs and home field in the first round.

Players can play any opponent at any time during that heat. The only restriction is that you cannot play the same opponent more than twice per heat. Tally sheets will be available at the kiosk and in the Wintergreen sports games room. The score and signature of both Managers should be on each Tally sheet. Scoresheets will also be available at the kiosk, for those who like to keep the inning by inning action. Completed Tally sheets should be turned in to the kiosk before 8pm each night.

The Playoffs:

The three heat winners will be seeded by qualifying heat winning percentage or overall tournament record, whichever is higher, and will be seeded from 1-3. Similarly, the three heat runners up and two wild cards will seed 4-8 using the same criteria and tiebreakers. It is mathematically possible, but highly improbable, that this could result in more than eight qualifiers. If this rare event occurs, these same tiebreakers below will be the criteria to determine a play-in. It is possible for a wildcard team to have a better record than a heat winner.

The tiebreaker ranking is as follows:

  1. head-to-head
  2. heat or overall winning percentage (whichever is higher)
  3. wins in qualifying games from item 2 (7-0 beats 6-0)
    • a) winning percentage outside of heat
    • b) games played outside of heat (0-1 beats 0-0, 4-2 beats 2-1)
  4. run differential in those games
  5. runs against in those games
  6. overall winning percentage
  7. overall wins (8-4 beats 6-3)
  8. overall run differential
  9. overall runs against
  10. if there's still a tie(!), play-in

If two teams are tied for item 2, and one team is using overall record and the other team is using heat record, then the team using overall record wins the tiebreaker.

Tiebreakers 2-5 reward, but do not penalize, additional play. For example, a team with a 6-2 heat record and 8-4 overall record uses its 6-2 heat games for tiebreakers 3-5. Conversely, a team with an overall better tournament record uses all its games for items 3-5 (and, in fact, 3-5 and 7-9 will be exactly the same).

Items 3a-b are only in effect if there are multiple teams tied for heat winner after tiebreakers 1-3. Thus, if one team elects not to play any other games in the tournament, and the other team has a winless 0-4 record, the second team will be the heat winner. (This rewards additional play but does not penalize for losing if the other contender is idle.)

If there are three or more teams tied for first place in a heat, the runner-up after tiebreakers will be second in the heat, and any other first place contenders will qualify for no worse than a wild card slot. This could lead to one of those unlikely results in which there are more than eight qualifiers.

If multiple teams are tied for second place in a heat (and there is a clear heat winner), then tiebreakers 2-5 are for the heat record in question.

First Round (Higher seed is home):

Single elimination

  • Game 1: #8 will play #1
  • Game 2: #7 will play #2
  • Game 3: #6 will play #3
  • Game 4: #5 will play #4

Second Round (Higher seed is home):

Single elimination

  • Game 5: Game 1 Winner plays Game 4 Winner
  • Game 6: Game 2 Winner plays Game 3 Winner

World Series:

best two of three, with the higher seed home in games 1 and 3, if necessary

Winners of Game 5 & 6 (second round) meet for the Championship.

Laurels:

  • Game 3 Loser: 6th place
  • Game 4 Loser: 5th place
  • Game 5 Loser: 4th place
  • Game 6 Loser: 3rd place
  • World Series Loser: 2nd place
  • World Series Winner: 1st place

Superstar Baseball Specific Rules

  • Please bring your Superstar Baseball special dice with you. There will be dice available for use in the sports room. These should NOT leave the room.
  • Teams should roll for home team. When playing two games, switch home and away.
  • No DH will be used
  • Pitchers can start every third game. (Three man rotation) Starting pitchers must sit for the next two games.
  • Relief pitchers can pitch a maximum of five innings per game. They must sit out the next game after they pitch, regardless of how many innings they pitched.
  • TIRE ratings should be checked for starters the inning after they give up a hit or walk. For relief pitchers, check the rating after the first batter faced.
  • Injuries are only for the current game.
  • Players in Right and Left Field must have a defensive rating as an OF.
  • The player in Center Field must have a rating as a CF.
