In continuing the recent trend of 3 scorers for the winning team, Marty Sample rode the backs of his MIT SGS teammates, Dave Finberg, Aaron Fuegi, and James Terry, to the top of the Team Tournament. James won Superstar Baseball for the first time while Dave and Aaron swept the Titan tournaments to outdistance the field by 6 points to win the 29th Team Tournament.
The Harry B's and Ghost Division fought it out for second place in the final of War at Sea. Bruce Monnin defeated Alan Applebaum in the final to give the top ranked Harry B's a second place finish with a score of 17.225 compared to the 27 seeded Ghost Division's 17.158. Both teams had 3 members score and 2 wins. Twentieth seeded School of Sharks finished 4th with 14 points while thirty-fifth seeded THB + Nora rounded out the top five with 13 points.
The Top Ten saw only two of the top five teams along with three ranked from 8 to 11. The other five teams were ranked between 20 and 53 by our handicapper. Uncivil Servants finished 6th with 12 points, The Siegelmen finished 7th with 11 points, fifty-third ranked and 150-1 odds Local Yokels finished 8th with 10 points, Robbing Peter to Pay Paul finished 9th with 10 points, and Greenville Mafia: Tattaglia rounded out the top 10 with 10 points.
No team had more than 3 members score this year, including the top 6 finishers who were also joined by 11th Iron Meeples, 12th TerraFarmers, 17th We Ain't Dead Yet, 20th No Dice, 23rd St Paul's Rejects, 27th Team Undecided, and 48th Meeple Syrup. Two of our ten finishers and seven of our top twenty-five finishers had scores from only one member.
The team that defied the odds was 61st ranked and 190-1 odds Los Lobos Locos who climbed 48 spots to finish 13th. The highest ranking team to plummet was 7th ranked Greenville Mafia: Corleone who managed to just stay out of last place by tiebreakers, finishing 75th out of 76 teams. Only seven of the top ten ranked teams managed to finish in the top 25 which would create havoc in our Bracket Bustin' Contest. Those failing to make the top 25 were 5th ranked Band of Fools finishing in 49th, 6th ranked Me & Three Stiffs finishing in 56th place, and the aforementioned Greenville Mafia: Corleone.
Scoring was slightly up as only 9.5% of our field (29 entrants) managed to successfully call their shot with 34.2% managing to place in the top 6 of their event. Chad Weaver proved to be the best as his win in Dominion earned him 10 points. Sceadeau DeTela in Gaia Project and Peter Pollard B-17 were close behind with 10 points with wins in their events getting them a bonus point to finish with 10 points.
With only two of the top 5 and 4 of the top ten ranked teams finishing in the top ten of this year's tournament, the Bracket Bustin' Contest was up for grabs for our 50 participants. Is 50% a good percentage, James Pei and Sean McCulloch think so. James and Sean managed to pick 5 of our top ten finishers but would force the convention director to dig past the first tiebreaker to determine the winner as neither picked any of the teams in the correct place. Therefore, the second tie-breaker was needed (who picked the lowest ranked team that finished in the top ten) in order to crown this year's Bracket Bustin' Contest. James, successfully picking 27th ranked Ghost Division, edged out Sean, who correctly picked 20th ranked School of Sharks, to become the Master of this year's Bracket Bustin Contest. James and Sean's points would have finished 17th in last year's contest. Eleven others successfully picked 4 teams in their bracket with Chris Meyers leading the field in picking teams in the correct slot with 3 of his 4 finishing in the place he choose. Congratulations to James on earning his 2020 Sustaining membership.
