Through the Ages is one of the most highly ranked and respected civ-building games of all time, and this tournament is always a highlight of WBC for those who play it.

Tournament Rules:

Through the Ages will be run as a tournament with two heats. For the last few years, one heat win has been sufficient to secure advancement to the semifinals (even for players who skip the other heat), though anyone who wants to guarantee advancement (even in the case of a large increase in the size of the field) is advised to play both.

For the heats we will play 3-player games whenever possible. For the playoffs the exact mix of 3 and 4-player games will depend on how many heat winners show up for the semifinal.

If there are at least 13 winners present for the semifinal then the Top 16 players will advance to four 4-player games (whose winners then crew a 4-player final). If less than 16 winners appear for the semifinal (or if total tournament attendance drops dramatically) then the GM will adjust the semifinal format so that 50% or less of the field advances and so that only as many non- winners advance as are necessary to complete even tables of 3- or 4-players.

Rules for Advancement:

Advancement will be based on the Heats Most Wins – Points standard tiebreakers.

HEATS: MOST WINS - POINTS (HMW-P):Tie-breakers are:

  1. Most Wins (e.g., total in all heats entered)
  2. Most Second Places
  3. Fewest total points behind first place in second place finishes. Not playing in a heat counts as an N/A for this criteria, not 0 points
  4. Fewest total points behind first place in all finishes. Not playing in a heat counts as an N/A for this criteria, not 0 points
  5. Fewest Heats
  6. High dice roll.

New Edition:

All games will use the new edition of the game, published in late 2015.

Miscellaneous Clarifications:

If the score is tied at the end of a heat, both players get credit for the higher position finish. If this happens in the semifinal or final then it is not possible to share the victory so the player who went later in the initial Turn Order wins the tiebreaker and gets credited with the higher finish.

If you are randomly paired against the same person in two different heats, you may request a new table.

In the semifinal, double heat winners will be seeded as evenly as possible among the tables.

Note that the Through The Ages honorable withdrawal rule trumps the normal WBC prohibition against leaving a multi-player game before it ends (though keep in mind that the new version does not allow for honorable withdrawals during Age IV).
