2020 Tournament Format  Swiss Elim

If you're a baseball fan or just like to roll dice, or if you happen to have a spare hour or two between your other events and are looking for something to do, come join the fun in our free-form baseball tournament. Superstar Baseball is a dice and chart game in which two managers pick a team, assemble a line-up, and see where the dice will lead for nine innings. Individual games take approximately an hour, and it's easy to learn. You'll be swinging for the fences (or dealing heat from the mound) in no time.

The first round is the draft of the teams.

This year teams must play six games per round. At the end of the second round, the top two teams with the best record will advance to the playoffs. In Round 3 the top two teams, not already in the playoffs, will advance. Same for Round 4. The two teams with the best overall record not in the playoffs will advance as Wild Cards. Teams will be seeded by Round record (win percentage). If teams are tied in a round, the team with the most wins becomes the higher seed. An 8-0 team gets a higher seed than a 6-0 team. If more than two teams are tied for a qualifying spot in an individual round, see the Tiebreakers in the Playoffs section below. Winners of each round will get the top three seeds in the playoffs and home field in the first round.

Players can play any opponent at any time during a round. The only restriction is that you cannot play the same opponent more than twice per round. Tally sheets will be available at the kiosk. The score and signature of both Managers should be on each Tally sheet. Scoresheets will also be available at the kiosk, for those who like to keep the inning by inning action. Completed Tally sheets should be turned in to the kiosk before 8pm each night.

Superstar Baseball Specific Rules

  • Please bring your Superstar Baseball special dice with you. There will be dice available for use in the sports room. These should NOT leave the room.
  • Teams should roll for home team. When playing two games, switch home and away.
  • As a general rule, there is no DH. However, if both teams are from the AL Wild Card era (post-1994), they may use the DH if both managers agree.
  • Pitchers can start every third game. (Three man rotation) Starting pitchers must sit for the next two games.
  • Relief pitchers can pitch a maximum of five innings per game. They must sit out the next game after they pitch, regardless of how many innings they pitched.
  • TIRE ratings should be checked for starters the inning after they give up a hit or unintentional walk. For relief pitchers, check the rating after the first batter faced.
  • Relief pitchers regain their second wind by rolling the 2W number or lower.
  • Injuries are only for the current game.
  • Players in Right and Left Field must have a defensive rating as an OF.
  • The player in Center Field must have a rating as a CF.

The Playoffs:

If two teams are tied for first place in a round, including head-to-head record, then tournament record in the other rounds will be the next tiebreaker, followed by games played, and then run differential. Thus, if one team elects not to play any other games in the tournament, and the other team has a winless 0-1 record, the second team will be the round winner. (This rewards additional play but does not penalize against an idle opponent.)

If multiple teams are tied for second place in a round (and there is a clear roound winner), then the tiebreakers for second place are, in order: head-to-head record, run differential, runs against, and, if necessary, overall tournament record. (This should reduce uncertainty for multiple teams on the bubble, but may still encourage additional play in the unlikely event all three tiebreakers do not identify a clear qualifier.)

If there are three or more teams tied for first place in a round, then the tiebreakers will be the same as for the multiple second place scenario. The runner-up after tiebreakers will be second in the round, and any other first place contenders will qualify for no worse than a wild card slot. Note, it is mathematically possible for this to result in more than two wild card spots. In this unlikely event, there may be one or more play-in games to make the final eight playoff teams.

The three round winners will be seeded by qualifying winning percentage or overall tournament record, whichever is higher and will be seeded from 1-3. If there are tiebreakers necessary for seeding, they will be head-to-head, run differential in the games that contributed to the higher winning percentage (either round or overall tournament), runs against in those games, and overall tournament record. (Again, this should not penalize additional play for those who have already qualified.)

Similarly, the three round runners up and two wild cards will seed 4-8 using the same tiebreakers as the round winners. If there are more than eight qualifiers, these tiebreakers will determine who would need to play-in. It is possible for a wildcard team to have a better record than a round winner.

First Playoff Round (Higher seed is home):

  • Single elimination
  • Game 1: #8 will play #1
  • Game 2: #7 will play #2
  • Game 3: #6 will play #3
  • Game 4: #5 will play #4

Second Playoff Round (Higher seed is home)

  • Single elimination
  • Game 5: Game 1 Winner plays Game 4 Winner
  • Game 6: Game 2 Winner plays Game 3 Winner

World Series (best two of three, with the higher seed home in games 1 and 3, if necessary)

  • Winners of Game 5 & 6 (second round) meet for the Championship.

Laurels:

  • Game 3 Loser: 6th place
  • Game 4 Loser: 5th place
  • Game 5 Loser: 4th place
  • Game 6 Loser: 3rd place
  • World Series Loser: 2nd place
  • World Series Winner: 1st place
