Five Tribes is an innovative remake of the age-old game Mancala by award-winning designer Bruno Cathala. The 5x6 game board starts with 3 meeples on each tile. Each turn, you pick up all the meeples from a tile of your choice and drop them off, one at a time, en route to another tile. You then take 2 actions, based on your ending tile and the color of the last meeple you placed.

During the Heats, 3- and 4-player games will be played, with 4-players preferred. No expansion content will be used for this event, only the base game components.

Throughout the event, family members will be separated unless it is impossible to avoid.

We will use one rules variation for this event: When dealing meeples to the board during setup, if three meeples of the same color are dealt to a single tile, return them to the bag and redraw for that tile.

During the Heats, a tie for first will be treated as a win for all players involved, and a tie for second as a second-place finish for all players involved. Ties in the Semifinal and Final will be broken in favor of the player who was earlier in the Turn Order on the Final round of the game (as suggested by designer Bruno Cathala on BoardGameGeek).

Advancement into the Semifinal will be based on the Heats Most Wins – Points Standard Tie-breakers with GM specific tie-breakers. These tie-breakers are listed below.

All players tied on points will be separated by the sum of their tie-breaker values.

Assuming at least 32 total players, the top 16 players will qualify for the Semifinal. If there are fewer than 32 total players, the Semifinal count will be the largest multiple of four that is less than or equal to half the total number of players. Alternates may be taken in ranked order to fill the Semifinal slots as needed up to the next multiple of four. The top four seeds from the heats will be separated for the Semifinal as much as possible.

Four players will advance to the Final. If one (or more) finalist cannot attend the scheduled Final, the GM will attempt to contact runners-up (in order of proximity to first place) from the Semifinal games to ensure a 4-player Final. If no suitable runners-up can be located, a 3-player Final will be held. Final placement for non-finalists (5th and 6th place) will be determined by finishing position in the Semifinal and then narrowest margin of loss by percentage.

A FAQ with common rules questions is available at: https://www.boardgamegeek.com/filepage/140990/unofficial-five-tribes-faq. Rules questions will be adjudicated as per the FAQ. Paper copies will be available at the tournament.
