In Adel Verpflichtet, players assume the roles of eccentric, aristocratic collectors who attempt to buy the greatest collection of obscure items at the auction house and exhibit them at a number of castles and palaces around Europe; the best exhibits gaining prestige and movement around the board. But beware! Thieves may appear at the auction house to steal the money paid for items or steal the items themselves when exhibited. Detectives may catch thieves who spend time in jail until their parole, while the Detective also gains movement around the board. Finally, when at least one player crosses the finish line, all the players have one more exhibit and the one who ends up farthest along the track is the winner. This is a coached event, come to any heat and learn how to play in just a few minutes!

In each Heat, everyone will play two games (though players with just one hour to spare could play just the first if needed). The result will be determined by adding the scores of both games (the points are 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 for 5-player games; 5, 4, 2, 1 for 4-player games; 5, 3, 1 for 3- player games). Pairings will be designed to have no 3-player games and as few 4-player games as possible. Each Heat is a separate entry for qualifying for the Semifinal.

Advancement to the Semifinal will be based on the Heats Most Wins – Points Standard Tie-breakers listed below. The number of advancing players will be the smallest of 15, 20, or 25 which accommodates all those who scored 8 points or more and any remaining positions will be filled using tie-breakers.

The Semifinal and Final will each be a single 4 or 5-player game. The place in each game is determined by # of spaces past the finish line, the largest exhibit, and the oldest card in the set.Semifinal Winners will advance to the Final.

Common questions from previous years:

  • Is hand size public or private?
    • For the purposes of tournament play hand size or number of cards in your hand is public information, you do NOT need to say how many cards are in your largest set. Hand size is known/shared information when playing online, so we will play the same in person at WBC.
  • In what order are points in the Castle awarded?
    • Always score exhibits first then detectives
  • HEATS: MOST WINS - POINTS (HMW-P):

    1. Most Wins (e.g., total in all heats entered)
    2. Total Points – Players earn the following pints in each heat they entered:
      • 1st Place - 1,000 points
      • 2nd Place - 100 points
      • 3rd Place - 10 points
      • 4th Place - 1 points
      • All other places - 0 points
      • e.g. player has a 1st, 2nd, and 4th in three heats: total points would be 1,101
    3. GM Specific Tie-breaker
      1. Total spaces beyond the finish line
      2. Total size of finished sets
      3. Total cards
      4. Oldest card
      5. Second oldest card
      6. Best Heat
    4. High dice roll.
