The golden age of Puerto Rico returns with this card game sequel! Players travel now to the capital city of this beautiful island. Who will build the most important buildings? Players build palaces, poor houses, silver smelters, gold mines, and many other types - each with its own special features. The cleverest player will build best and win!
As with the boardgame Puerto Rico, players choose roles which can help all players, but the choosing player gets a special privilege with the role chosen. Players build buildings, produce and sell goods, prospect for (card) gold, and council to give the power to choose your fate (in card form)! The game is based on Puerto Rico (and plays similarly to Race for the Galaxy) but is different enough to give players new challenges and opportunities for fun and enjoyment. This game plays in 30-40 minutes and is easy to pick up and learn!
Games will be 2-player, not 4-player, making it imperative that players bring a copy (or copies) of the game if they can. If games are in short supply, and they probably will be, priority will be given to those bringing a game. Players are allowed to use either the first or second edition of the game, their choice. If the pair of players are unable to decide on a version, first edition will be the default option. There will be rules given on how to alter the second edition to first edition, if necessary.
The first round will consist of four preliminary games with players matched by their records in true Swiss fashion. After first game, winners will be matched with winners and players who did not win would be matched similarly. However, players ARE ALLOWED to join or leave at any point in that first round (as long as it is not in the middle of their game of course!).
After the Swiss portion, players with at least three wins will qualify for the Single Elimination bracket until one remains! If there are uneven participants for the first matchup in the elimination round, byes will be given to most recent past champion present, and then in reverse order of past champions. A champion who elects to pass on his or her right to a bye is not allowed to postpone its use until later in the event. If there are any further buys needed, they will be given to those participants that received a 3-0 standing in the Swiss Rounds, chosen randomly amongst what is left.
Continued Update for this year: By popular request, 3rd and 4th place will be determined by a final face off for those that did not win their Semifinal game (top 4). 5th and 6th will be determined as in years past, where 5th place will go to the person whom lost in the top 8 round to the eventual winner, and 6th place will go to the person whom lost in the top 8 round to the eventual 2nd place.
FAQ:
- To start the game, players will flip over a trading tile and whomever has the tile with higher sales values will start. That starting person will receive 5 cards, and the second person will receive 6 cards and then both players will discard down to 4 cards
-
- -All discards must be FACED DOWN, and players are not allowed to take back their cards once discarded
- -For the Governor, the Library may only be used in ONE of their two actions. Please be sure to denote when this ability has been used within a round
- The player who selects the role is the FIRST to take the associated action
- You never HAVE to take the action the role provides. However, both players have the option to take the action, with exception of the Prospector
- You may only build one each of the city buildings, but you may buy multiples of production buildings
- If you have built both a Carpenter and Poor House, the Carpenter takes effect first and then the Poor House
You may only start receiving the effects of buildings built after the current building phase has ended
- Each Governor will remind both players that they may use Governor actions and ensure that both players discard down to 7 (or 12 if player has built a Tower). A player is allowed to have more than their hand limit during the round but must discard down at the beginning of the new Governor round
- Number of hand cards and produced wares are public knowledge
- As soon as a player has 12 buildings in their player area, the game ends IMMEDIATELY after the current Builder phase
- First end game tie-breaker is number of leftover hand cards and produced wares on production buildings (higher wins). Second end game tie-breaker is number of buildings built (higher wins). Hoping we do not go more than that this year
