Join us for one of the most venerable wargames played at WBC! The game simulates the D-Day invasion. You know, Saving Private Ryan! The Longest Day! Beginners are welcome. The GM will demo the game before the start of play in the convention demo area. If you have read the rules or attend the Demo, you’re welcome to play.
Format: There will be a Mulligan Round preceding the start of Round 1. If you win your Mulligan Round, you can skip Round 1 and automatically advance to Round 2. If you lose, you can still play in Round 1 as if the Mulligan did not happen. Starting in 2025, the format changed. We play 2 rounds per day instead of 3, and rounds are now 6 hours instead of 5. Play will continue until a single undefeated player remains.
Choosing Sides: Each player will secretly pick a counter of his preferred side and then reveal that side simultaneously with his opponent. If the sides are different, the game begins without a bid. If they are the same, the players will bid for their preferred side using Supply Points (SP). Either player will roll 1 die: if even, the die roller bids first; if odd, the non-die roller bids first. The players will alternately trade bids of whole SP until a player passes. The passing person then gets the bid amount as their initial banked SP and they will play the side neither player preferred at the start of bidding. These SP can only be used to buy impulses, not to resupply units.
Duration: The GM and assistant GMs may adjudicate matches not finished within 15 minutes of the start of the next round. No one wants to have their game adjudicated (including the adjudicators) but it is our only option if the tournament is to proceed in a timely fashion. The GM will monitor play and issue warnings to speed up play as needed. Speed of play will be taken into account in adjudications.
Tournament Rules: We will play the one-week scenario of Breakout: Normandy. The L2 version will be played. If you only have the Avalon Hill version, no problem! There are no changes to the map and components, and there are only a few changes to the rules. The tournament FAQ, L2 errata, and the differences between the Avalon Hill and L2 versions can be found at breakoutnormandy.com.
GM phone: (585) 362-6195. The GM will arrange Mulligan round games for interested parties who have conflicts with the scheduled Mulligan time.
