You think you've got what it takes to be a leader of men? The Combat Commander tournament will give you the opportunity to display your leadership qualities. The Combat Commander tournament will feature scenarios from the European Theater for the years 1940-1945. You are in command and the troops await your Orders.

Whether you have never played before, haven’t played in a while, or a huge fan -- come join us for the one of the best tactical WW2 games. With our Swiss System format, you are welcome to play as many or as few rounds as you like. If you want to play in any round, we will find an opponent for you!

This year's event will require the use of Combat Commander: Europe/Med. 20th Anniversary Edition or both Combat Commander: Europe and Combat Commander: Mediterranean. To ensure sufficient games for tournament play, please bring your copy.

Things you should know

Even if you haven’t played before or just need a refresher on the rules, you are welcome to attend the demo to familiar yourself with the game.

We will be also offering a coached game during Round 1 only for inexperienced players that attended the demo. The coached game will be treated as a bye for the experienced player who is coaching the new player and a loss for the coached player. Coached games will be assigned to willing experienced players (with preference to immediate past champion as described in Byes section below), at the discretion of the GM.

Play in as many or few of the Swiss Rounds as you wish, but the less you play, the less your chances to advance. Rounds skipped will be treated as a loss. In the event a win/loss record includes a skipped round (not a bye), that player may not be eligible for advancement (up to the discretion of the GM), should there be an odd number of competitors playing in Round 5.

Each round there will be a predetermined scenario to play. Final determination of the scenario played each round will be announced by the GM before the round starts.

The available scenarios for this year's event will be scenarios published at the link above. Scenarios will also be published on BGG. For those that attended the WBC in 2024, most of the scenarios will look familiar.

Pairings in Round 1 will be determined randomly. In Rounds 2, 3 and 4, pairings will be determined randomly by win/loss records with opponents being paired with similar records. In the event of an odd number of players with the same win/loss record during pairings, one player will be selected from the pool with the next best win/loss record. Side choices for each scenario will be determined randomly.

BYES: Byes will be awarded based on WBC rules. Byes will try to be avoided or postponed whenever possible with the goal to keep the most people playing and the least people waiting. Ideally, an “Eliminator” can be provided, perhaps an earlier eliminated player, to prevent byes altogether. Playing as an eliminator does not allow a previously eliminated player to be re-entered into the tournament. The eliminators result does not count towards their tournaments status.

If a bye is required in the first round of a Single Elimination event, it will be offered to the most recent past champion present, as listed on the event kiosk. In the event that the most recent past champion elects to pass on his or her right to a bye they should be offered in order of past champions until the bye is awarded. After the first round, byes will be offered to players with the worst records to ensure that players who finish the highest are less likely to have received such a benefit. Any additional byes will be given to participants who have provided copies of the game. No person can receive a second bye until all remaining players have received one. A bye will be treated a full win for purposes of the tournament.

Semifinal

Players with a 4-0 record, after the first 4 rounds of play, automatically advance to the Semifinal. If we have fewer than 4 players with 4-0 win/loss record, the remaining seats in the Semifinal will be filled with those with a 3-1 win/loss record. Depending on the number of players with 4-0 record, multiple competitors with 3-1 records may advance. If there are more competitors with 3-1 win/loss records than are needed to fill out the Semifinal, players wishing to advance must play a Round 5 with a mini scenario to identify those advancing. An eliminator may be recruited to ensure each competitor with a 3-1 record has the opportunity to play in Round 5. The eliminator may not advance to the Semifinal unless otherwise qualified to do so.

Round 5 pairings will be determined randomly. Competitors with 3-1 win/loss records who are also victorious in Round 5 may advance to the Semifinal. After Round 5, in the event that we still have more competitors (or need more competitors) that are needed to fill out the Semifinal, participants in Round 5 may determine who will be advancing by playing the same mini scenario or other method of chance to see who advances. In the event of a lack of agreement, the default method of determination of who advances is playing the mini-scenario.

Pairings for the Semifinal will first be based on win/loss records, and then determined randomly, even if the players were matched up in earlier rounds. While it is preferred those with 4-0 win/loss records are paired with a 3-1 record, it is possible that two competitors with 4-0 records will be paired against each other. If this happens, pairings will be randomly determined. The remaining seats of the Semifinal may be made up by competitors with a preliminary 3-1 win/loss record from those who won the elimination play in Round 5.

Winners of the Semifinal round will advance to the Final round, playing for First and Second Place. Losers of the Semifinal round will play against each other to determine Third and Fourth place. Players with the lower win-loss record will choose the scenario played in Semifinal and Final. Players with the higher win-loss record will choose the sides. In the event of a pairing with an identical win-loss record, players will randomly choose who picks the scenario, and the other player will have his/her choice of sides.

Fifth and Sixth Places will be awarded to those competitors who did not advance to the Semifinals based on the final standings of the player preventing their advancement (Strength of Schedule). Thus, a competitor who loses to the eventual champion may be awarded 4 tie-breaking points and a competitor who loses to the second-place competitor will be awarded a 3 tie-breaking points, and so on. Fifth place will be awarded to whomever has the best win-loss record with the most tie-breaking points, and sixth place will be awarded to the competitor with the next highest tie-breaking points. If players are tied after using these specified tiebreakers, the GM will resolve the ties with a die roll.

Available scenarios for the Semifinal and Final are any played in the 2026 tournament.
