The time: about 500 A.D.

The Place: the first islands of a new culture, later to be known as Polynesia.

The Situation: you lead a tribe looking to expand its influence throughout the Pacific Ocean.

Conquest of Paradise is a game of empire building in the Polynesian Triangle of the central Pacific Ocean for up to four players. Players explore the surrounding unknown ocean, hoping to discover the most lucrative island groups, and colonize them. They build canoes and train warriors to create a force to defend their empire, while forging lines of communication with their developing discoveries. Using your scarce resources wisely is key to victory. Investing in exploration widens your empire. Building warriors strengthens your empire. Investing resources into cultural innovations can yield unexpected dividends, like tattooing, hula dancing, surfing, or even the giant moai statues of Easter Island fame.

Previously published by GMT Games, with a new edition due from Phalanx Games, Conquest of Paradise is a fast-playing design geared to appeal to players who enjoy civilization games. You can learn the game in an hour and finish a complete game in two or three hours. It is a game of exploration and empire building, but also about conflict. Choosing when to build those expensive war canoes, and when and where to fight, given limited resources, is key to your success.

Please attend the Demo if you need to learn the game; one hour is more than enough time to learn! All of the Advanced rules (except, of course, variable game end) will be used, including the Random Event cards!

There will be one Tournament Rule: Arts & Culture cards will cost three Build Points (instead of two BP).

The new Phalanx edition is scheduled to be available before the tournament; despite the very different graphics, it is essentially the same game (with a few minor changes) and can be played in the tournament.

Starting home islands will be determined by random draw in the heats and by seeding in following rounds. We will attempt to have all 4-player games but may need to resort to an occasional 3-player game to accommodate arrivals. The new 5-player version will not be played this year.

All winners and some second-place finishers (as required to fill 4-player boards) will advance to the Semifinal based on the Heats Most Wins – Points Standard Tie-breakers with a GM specific tiebreaker listed below.

Semifinal and Final games will always be 4-player games.

Seeding and top second place finishers will be determined by the difference between their score and the winning score in their game.

HEATS: MOST WINS - POINTS (HMW-P):

  1. Most Wins (e.g., total in all heats entered)
  2. Total Points – Players earn the following pints in each heat they entered:
    • 1st Place - 1,000 points
    • 2nd Place - 100 points
    • 3rd Place - 10 points
    • 4th Place - 1 points
    • All other places - 0 points
    • e.g. player has a 1st, 2nd, and 4th in three heats: total points would be 1,101
  3. GM Specific Tie-breaker - the difference between winning score and the runner-up score in Heat
  4. High dice roll.
