Welcome to the 2026 Space Base Tournament!

This event will advance 25 players to the Semifinal using the Heats Most Wins - Points standard tie-breakers as listed below. Depending on the number of players who qualify (and show up) the number of players for the Semifinal and Final will be determined (4- or 5-players, preferably).

Heat games will be 4- or 5- players (based on number of entrants and the number of available games). If you have a copy of the game, please let the GM know when you sign in. Seating for the Heats will be done on an ad-hoc basis (GM will assist in finding an available spot whenever possible). The Semifinal and Final will use random seating for both table and seat assignments.

IMPORTANT: All games will use the “Lightspeed Variant” in the updated rules from AEG. For those not familiar, this variant changes the initial setup as follows:

  • All players begin with 15 Credits, 1 Base Income, and 0 Victory Points
  • After the initial 6 cards are dealt for each row of ship cards, each player receives 4 Level 1 cards and 2 Level 2 cards.
  • From those initial 6 cards, each player may purchase any number of them (up to the 15 starting credits available) and place them per standard rules. Any cards not purchased are returned to the bottom of their respective decks.
  • Any credits remaining are kept by each player and the player with the most credits left becomes the starting player. If there is a tie, the tied player who purchased the highest sector card becomes the start player. If still tied, a dice roll will decide.

Starting bonuses for the 2nd through 5th players are also granted per the core rules:

  • Player 2 – 1 Credit
  • Player 3 – 2 Credits
  • Players 4 and 5 – 1 Base Income

All games will be played with only the base game cards. Players are free to use any color of dice/starting cards they wish.

KEY CHANGE FOR 2026 AND BEYOND

The 2025 event made it clear that a key change is necessary going forward to make Space Base the most enjoyable event it can be. The Level 3 Ship UES Gordon (causes all other players to lose 4VP’s or 3 VP’s depending on if has been flipped or not) creates a very negative play experience, especially as this event utilizes the Lightspeed Variant. With the Lightspeed Variant, if this card is in the opening Level 3 market, a player can choose to hold on to all 15 of their starting money with the hope of going first and buying this card on turn 1. This results in very negative play experiences for the other players at the table. As a result, the UES Gordon will NOT be allowed in the Level 3 deck for future Space Base events at WBC (at least the future events that I’m the GM for). I believe this decision will only make the event more enjoyable (or at least less unenjoyable) for everyone.

HEATS: MOST WINS - POINTS (HMW-P):

  1. Most Wins (e.g., total in all heats entered)
  2. Total Points – Players earn the following pints in each heat they entered:
    • 1st Place - 1,000 points
    • 2nd Place - 100 points
    • 3rd Place - 10 points
    • 4th Place - 1 points
    • All other places - 0 points
    • e.g. player has a 1st, 2nd, and 4th in three heats: total points would be 1,101
  3. GM Specific Tie-breaker - None Specified
  4. High dice roll.
