A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away . . .

It is a period of civil war. Rebel forces, striking from a hidden base, seek to inspire other systems to resist the mighty Galactic Empire. The Empire has deployed their greatest super-weapon, the Death Star, to seek out and destroy the Rebel base before they can become a true threat.

Star Wars: Rebellion brings the excitement of the original film trilogy to life. The Alliance must develop their reputation by completing top-secret missions against the Empire’s infrastructure. But they are massively outgunned by the Empire and must carefully protect the location of their hidden base. The Empire, buoyed by industrial output on a galactic scale, methodically searches for the Rebel base while quashing even the faintest hint of rebellion. It’s a race against time for both factions, pitting the Alliance’s diplomacy and ingenuity against the propaganda and might of the Empire, with the fate of the galaxy in the balance.

At its best, Star Wars is about memorable characters and Star Wars: Rebellion is no exception. Both factions have access to a wide cast of characters to support their causes, including Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, Mon Mothma, and Grand Moff Tarkin. These icons of the Star Wars universe will lead troops into battle both in space and on land or will recreate key moments from the movies. And, in true Star Wars fashion, an opposing leader may appear at an unexpected moment to interfere with even the best laid plans. The result is a dynamic game where a single leader’s presence could shift momentum from one faction to another. Though the movies demonstrate one possible outcome, your game may not end the same way!

Learning Games:

Players who wish to learn Star Wars Rebellion may choose to play a learning game. Such new players will be matched against consenting experienced players (determined by (1) Champions in order of vintage, (2) by the previous year’s laurelists, and (3) then as determined in the GM’s discretion). The experienced player will receive the win for tournament purposes (which shall count for purposes of future byes) and the new player will receive hands-on coaching in the game from a veteran opponent.

The GM team encourages new players interested in learning Star Wars Rebellion to partake using this option!

Event Overview:

Players in the Mulligan Round and Round 1 will be matched based on preference between the base game’s Advanced Setup (with Action cards) and the Rise of the Empire setup and rules. In the event of an odd player distribution with respect to preferences, priority will be given to the Advanced Setup.

Round 2 and beyond will also use the Rise of the Empire expansion: cinematic combat, Rise of the Empire starting units, and choice of mission decks as described on page 02 of the Rise of the Empire Expansion rulebook. Note: The Death Star Under Construction may NOT be placed on Dagobah at the start of the game. Players may use another variant during any round by mutual agreement.

Schedule:

Each round will last 3 hours, 45 minutes, and players will receive a 90 minute and 45-minute warning before the end of the round. At the 3 hour and 45 minutes mark, any games that have not been concluded will be adjudicated. Slow play will be a factor should a game need to be adjudicated. The schedule is continuous starting with Round 2.

The Mulligan and Round 1 will begin with assignment of matches. Players who are matched together and mutually agree, with the consent of the GM, to coordinate and schedule play of their game may do so outside of the reserved timeslot, provided, that (i) such game must be complete before Round 2, (ii) the GM reserves the right to award losses to both players in the event such game is not completed, and (iii) the default time is the listed time in the schedule.

Tournament Rules:

Star Wars Rebellion is a coached-event, but it is also a complex game. If you do not know how to play and would like to learn, please come to the demo, read through the rulebooks in advance, or show up for a teaching game in the mulligan round.

The official Star Wars: Rebellion FAQ & Errata will be used in conjunction with the rulebooks if any rules questions arise.

Faction selection will be determined by bidding Rebel Influence for the opportunity to play as the Empire. The bidding will proceed as outlined below:

  1. Players will decide if they will play the default variant of the game for the round, or an alternate one
  2. Randomly determine starting world loyalty using the procedure outlined in the Advanced setup rules (Page 18 in the Learn to Play rulebook)
  3. Both players will roll 3 dice as if rolling for an opposed mission. The player with the most successes wins the first bid. On a tie, both players roll again
  4. The winning player bids to play as the Empire. Bids must be whole numbers. A bid of 1 means that the bidding player will play as the Empire, and the Rebel player starts the game 1 space lower on the Rebel Influence track (space 13 instead of 14)
  5. Their opponent has the option to bid a higher number or pass. They continue alternating bids until one player passes. Negative bids (opting to play the Empire with Rebel track starting higher, on space 15) are allowed, but there has not been a negative final bid in the history of the tournament
  6. Proceed with normal setup as described in the basic rules. Players using the expansion must next follow the “choosing mission sets” rules outlined on P. 2 of the Rise of the Expansion rulebook to set their mission deck
  7. Players with a copy of the game are encouraged to arrive early to set up as much as possible before the round starts

Tournament Information:

At the 3 hour and 45 minutes mark, any games that have not been concluded will be adjudicated. This includes the Semifinal and Final. In the event of an adjudicated game, the GM will take into account, among other factors:

  • pace of play
  • the Rebel Base location
  • the Rebel influence
  • the Rebel objective cards in hand
  • both players’ hands of mission cards
  • the overall board position

While swift play does not necessarily correspond with greater skill or experience, the tournament data over the past six events shows that over 90% of games complete in under 3 hours and 30 minutes. The GM team will consider pace of play to be a heavy factor in any adjudications.

The non-learning Mulligan round and Round 1 games will be paired from the players present. Typically, a player who has a copy of the game will be paired with one who does not. Family and team members will be separated as best as possible.

After Round 1, the event will switch to traditional single-elimination. Play will continue for as many rounds as necessary to create a single undefeated player.

Beginning with Round 2, all match-ups will be randomly made, provided, that the GM team will endeavor to avoid rematching players who have already played in the Mulligan or Round 1, again in Round 2. For the avoidance of doubt, those who win the Mulligan round will automatically advance to Round 2.

During the single-elimination rounds, the GM may form a random bracket of matchups so that players can continue to play as their opponents win and become available. Mutually decided upon food breaks between the players are acceptable but should last no more than 30 minutes and the GM must be notified so we do not slow down the tournament. Please be aware that your next round may start sooner than 4 hours after the previous round started due to the continuous format.

In the event of an odd number of participants in the Mulligan round or round 1, a bye will be given to the most recent champion present who wishes to accept.

In subsequent rounds, an eliminator will be used in lieu of a bye if available from amongst the Star Wars Rebellion faithful. If none are available, then a willing player who has already lost may be designated. If no eliminator is available, byes will be awarded.

Byes will be first awarded to previous tournament winners, if applicable. Afterwards, they will be awarded randomly. The GM Team seeks to avoid any player receiving more than one bye.
