The Tides of History ...
The version of the game used in the
event is the Hasbro edition (2001). A copy of the rules and the
FAQ for this version is available for download through the recommended
link above.
The event format consists of two heats
advancing the top 18 players to the semi-finals.
The top 18 consists of the individual
game winners from each heat and then the top scoring non-winners
from both heats. Non-winners are ranked based upon their score
in the heat game as a percentage of the games' winning score.
For example, if the winning score for a heat game is 200 and
your score is 190, then your percentage would be 95.
This allows for a more realistic "apples
to apples" comparison between individual heat games in which
the raw VP scores may vary widely. The idea being that a low
scoring second (or even third) place finish in a hard-fought
game is better than a high scoring second place finish in a run-away
game. The moral of the story here is to always "gang up"
on the leader!
The same procedure is also used to fill
the Final. The three semi-final winners move on along with the
top three non-winning semi-finals players based again upon their
score as a percentage of their individual semi-final games' winning
score.
Be sure to check the event kiosk located
in the Paradise Terrace area after the heats have concluded to
find out the rankings for advancement to the semi-finals. Also,
if you aren't in the top 18 players as listed on the kiosk you
may still be eligible for play in the semi-finals in the (likely)
event a player (or players) above you in the rankings chooses
not to continue in the event. Show up prior to the start of the
semi-final round to see if a slot is available.
Please bring a copy of the game! I know
that it is a rather large and heavy item, but we are always on
the edge of not having enough copies for those wanting to play.
It would be unfortunate if players were unable to compete due
to a lack of games.
