Another One for the GM ...

Nine winners plus the best three runners-up from the heats filled three semifinal tables. In the first semifinal, two-time champion Jeff Cornett (9-9-10-12) used balanced scoring to squeak by another two-time champion Eric Freeman (7-10-10-11). In the second semifinal, defending champion Craig Moffitt (7-8-8-10) won on the last turn after Aaron Fuegi (6-6-8-10) played a catastrophe in an agonizing end-game decision the previous turn. In hindsight, starting internal conflict with only a two-tile advantage would have ended the game with Aaron ahead. In the last semifinal, Brad Sherwood (8-8-9-12) as the fourth dynasty nipped Bob Woodson (7-8-8-18). Eric’s score was within two hypothetical treasures of the win and he advanced as the best runnerup to complete the Final table.

Final Seating was Jeff 1st (Archer), Eric 2nd (Bull), Craig 3rd (Lion), and Brad 4th (Potter). Jeff, playing first, was left alone with plenty of space to setup to the southwest. In the northwest, Brad placed his Trader in the corner to challenge Eric’s King across the river. Craig started out with his King and Trader in the eastern delta.

Opening Land Grabs

Craig and Jeff both continued to expand and setup for green monuments. However, Craig infiltrated his Priest to harass Jeff’s expansion. Eric ignored Brad’s trader and grew his main kingdom in other colors. Meanwhile, Brad set up a second kingdom in the northeast with his Priest and Farmer. Eric’s Trader and Brad’s King also set up small isolated kingdoms to each score a pair of points with the least common tile colors.

Craig and Jeff Eye the Central Treasure

The middle-game started as Craig and Jeff both inched towards the central treasure. Craig jumped his Priest to gain the center treasure and swing a block of supporting tiles to his kingdom. Jeff retaliated with a catastrophe to prevent an unfavorable merger. The eastern Kingdom grew larger when it merged peacefully with Brad’s group and then wiped out Eric’s Trader to give Craig a pair of treasures. Brad cashed in on the emergent Kingdom by winning external conflicts with both his colors at Jeff and Craig’s expense. Two additional catastrophes in the center of the board ended the bullying with vast wasteland separating the kingdoms.

Three Catastrophes

Eric got his Trader back on the board with a big internal conflict where he added five temples. He followed this by building a Green/Black monument in the gap that was created—foiling both Craig and Jeff’s ambition for that construction. Instead, Jeff built a Green/Red Monument, but Eric immediately stretched south and won a solo blue victory against Craig’s farmer. Craig’s Priest jumped into the hole that was created to win an internal conflict against Jeff for partial control of the monument and a pair of red points. He also gifted Brad a blue point to build the Blue/Black monument.

Brad Attacks

On the last turn, Brad finally got his revenge when he added a floating temple for an extra support in a rematch against Eric. Brad won and gained partial control of the Green/Black monument. Next, Jeff grabbed some loose Settlements on the way to launching a pivotal merger against the northwest kingdom. He won five black cubes against Eric’s King, but was surprised when Brad had three Markets to defend his newly placed Trader.

Brad’s Trader Wins

With the tile bag dangerously low, Eric tried to improve his lowest color by attacking Brad’s Trader with a 3-tile advantage. Brad again had enough tiles to repulse the attack and ended Eric’s winning chances. Play passed to Craig who built the game’s fourth monument before swapping tiles to end the game, just passing Brad for the lead. In the final tally, Craig won with a score of 7-7-7-8 (six each black and blue plus two treasures), Brad had 6-8-9-10, Jeff had 6-6-7-12, and Eric had 5-6-6-10.

Next year, the 1/1/2/2 action rules variant and hypothetic treasure margin-of-victory tiebreaker will be kept. The GM would like to thank everyone for their participation and is looking forward to another great event at our new venue next year.
