still on Trial ...
This
year scheduling conflicts caused a reduction of participants
to the Gettysburg tournament. Those that did enter had
a fun time. No complaints were heard regarding the format or
play of the tournament. This year the time provided for each
round was extended 30 minutes from the previous year. This resulted
in no games having to be adjudicated.
2002 witnessed the return of previous multi-year champion,
Vince Meconi. Many new faces to the tournament were present also.
After two preliminary rounds of the three day campaign scenario,
with sudden death victory conditions, the final round was started
in the same afternoon. Three time champion Vince Meconi faced
off against two-time champion (and Game Master) Allen Kaplan.
The long anticipated battle found Vince's Confederates unable
to do anything wrong. By the morning of the second day, Allen's
Union forces were on the verge of collapse. All the infantry
divisions were step reduced, except for one which was eliminated.
As the South continued to mop up the Yankees with impunity, the
Union conceded the inevitable.
The format for next year's tournament is being considered.
One suggestion is to have the rounds strung out over several
days with the players being matched up with a deadline to complete
each round. Another option is to start after the preliminary
rounds of the opening Swiss rounds Battlecry ends on Saturday
afternoon. This will give all the players who have been eliminated
from Battlecry and the other tournaments a new game to
enter. The goal is to increase participation. Your comments are
welcome.
