That's one lucky guy ...
Many people think that Cosmic Encounter is largely
luck, but the WBC results suggest otherwise. Tom Stokes has won
for the third year in a row. Tim Swartz has placed second or
third all three years. Unfortunately, participation has continued
to drop. A number of people commented to me that they preferred
one of the earlier editions. Next year, the Mayfair edition will
be preferred as the default option, with the Hasbro edition--and
possibly the Eon edition--used if not enough Mayfair sets are
available.
Altogether,
ten games were played. Eight of these ended with a solo victory.
Tom Stokes was the only player with two solo victories. Last
year there were considerably more shared wins. Healer is the
only power that stood out, winning three of the eight games.
The Healer led in the average number of points gained, at 17.5
per game. The Sorcerer and The Virus followed with averages of
11.7 and 11.3 points per game respectively. Two of the games
ended with a two-player victory. I'm not surprised to see that
both of these victories involved the Empath.
The Healer was also the blodiest of the powers. Healer players
killed an average of 26 ships per game, half again as many as
Chronos, the closest rival at 17 ships per game. The more ships
resurrected, the more available to be killed. Philanthropist
was the kindest power, with an average of only four ships killed
per game.
Virus was the most efficient at gathering points, with .87
points per ship killed. Healer, Philanthropist, and Empath followed
with .67, .65, and .60 points per ship killed, respectively.
