"He said not to worry about
the Sturmtigers; they wouldn't hit anything!"
ASL at the 2003 WBC has come and gone. Only 24 ASLers
participated this year. Next year ASL may be one of the three
pre-con events in an attempt to bring back the attendance numbers
we used to have by freeing up players from schedule conflicts.
After three rounds we had only three players at 3-0: Jim Stahler,
J.R. Tracy, and Kevin Valerien. In round 4 the spoiler, Gary
Mei (2-1), defeated Kevin Valerien (3-0), meaning the winner
of the Jim Stahler vs. J.R. Tracy match would be the tournament
winner. Both games were, by coincidence, J35 Siam Sambal. J.R.
Tracy won the tournament when his French defeated Jim's Siamese.
Vincent Alonso and Tom Ruta brought some eye-catching miniatures
and micro-armor for their ASL games. Chris Schulz, John
Dober and Timothy Tilch played about half of scenario ABTF8,
"God Save the King!", but had to call it a draw when
it got too late. Combined with MMP's double-sized set that they
were using to give lessons nearby, ASL games caught many
players' eyes! We had two people play their first-ever ASL
game at the tournament and one of them also won his first game,
so the learning curve can't be as steep as some say! Other people
stopped by to ask questions about ASL. Like all gamers,
ASL players are always willing to talk about their game,
so the players were more than willing to answer any questions
they had.
The rest of the top six couldn't be resolved until Sunday
afternoon as half a dozen played in the quiet of the last day
of WBC. The last game to finish determined the order of the Jims
for 4th and 5th places! Using the standard ASL WBC tie-breakers,
the final results are:
1
J.R. Tracy
2 Gary Mei (6 wins)
3 Kevin Valerien (5 wins)
4 Jim Mehl (4)
5 Jim Stahler (4)
6 Vincent Alonso (3)
7 Mike O'Leary (3)
8 Mark Pitcavage (3)
9 Tom Morin (2)
10 Scott Romanowski (2)
11 Sumner Clarren (2)
12 Tom Ruta (2)
13 Michael Rodgers (2)
14 Ralph McDonald (2)
15 Chris Schulz (1.5)
16 John Dober (1.5)
17 Timothy Tilch (1.5)
18 Kurt Kurtz (1)
19 Dan Dolan (1)
20 Art Davis (1)
21 Ken Dunn (1)
22 Cliff A. Smith (0)
23 tie between Carrington Ward (0) and Thomas Shaw, Jr. (0)
Congratulations to all the players, and thank you for playing!
Jeff Evich takes over the GM duties in 2004 with an eye towards
moving the event into the Pre-Con in an attempt to reverse the
attendance slide of recent years.
