run silent, run deep ... well,
silent anyway
Attack Sub has a small but dedicated following that
once again turned out Sunday morning to contest control of the
seas. This year the tournament was reclassified as a B event
and six new recruits showed up for the teaching session and stayed
on to play in the event. Welcome aboard and let's keep up the
influx of newcomers next year!
The
preliminary heat consisted of four-person groups playing round-robin
matches from a choice of six scenarios (A, B, C, D, E, H), and
eleven players with 3-0 or 2-1 records advanced to the single-elimination
portion. Due to the odd number of players involved in the single-elimination
portion there were only three quarter-final games and one semi-final
match prior to the finals.
In the semi-final match Andre Strauss took up the US cause
in scenario H vs Bob Heinzmann's Soviet boomer. This scenario
can often be difficult for the boomer as the capabilities of
the US Seawolf are impressive. This match proved no exception
as the Seawolf quickly located the boomer while the escorting
Soviet attack sub was unable to intercede. Two torpedoes later
it was all over, as the boomer broke up and sank into the depths.
In the finals, Steve Caler selected scenario E and Andre elected
to play the Soviet surface force and try to prevent the escape
of Steve's renegade Soviet boomer. Steve's aggressive Typhoon
steadily closed on the two initial surface ships while Andre
could neither get an attack solution on the boomer or bring on
his reinforcement. The first torpedo from the boomer missed it's
mark but the second hit for one sensor damage. Andre repaired
the damage, and just in time as a second torpedo hit for one
attack and one sensor. The surface fleet finally got off two
torpedoes but both missed the boomer, while Steve fired a third
torpedo into the target, finally sinking it. Andre's reinforcement
attempts continued to fail while the boomer closed the remaining
ship and sank it with one shot. This resulted in the unusual
situation of there being no active ships on the surface side,
but the boomer still had to successfully reach a firing position
to win, while the surface reinforcement could still appear to
chase down the boomer. So it was a race between the two playing
Close/Open range cards trying to exit on one side and reinforce
on the other. Andre succeeded first, bringing in the remaining
surface ship, but on his sixth try Steve was able to reach a
firing position before the ship could close. So Steve won the
match and the tournament, while starting WWIII in the process!
