Five races on three tracks over three days cut 33 divers down
to the top 14 for the finals.
Nine
drivers raced Monaco ending with a win for 2000 champion Scott
Cornett and qualifying finishes for Paul Haynes, John Welage,
and Chris Hancock. Ten more drivers were led across the Monaco
finish line by Doug Schulz with Don Tatum, John Shaheen, and
Lane Newbury right behind.
1999 Champion Gerald Lientz outlasted 13 other drivers at
Interlagos for the win with Scott, Darin Morley, and Doug rounding
out the top four.
On one track of Argentina Terry Schulz went from pole position
to checkered flag, Chris, Chip Jansen, and Franklin Haskell also
finished in the top four. On the other track of Argentina Jim
Fleckenstein parlayed a first row start into a first place finish
with Scott, Doug Galullo, and Kevin Keller finishing in the top
four.
The final was raced on a "Frankenstein's Monster"
"ù" track made up of corners from the three
qualifying tracks.
The first half of the race saw the majority of the decisive
action. On the second turn, Gerald succeeded in forced passing
the leaders but spun out in the process and fell back to the
pack. Terry pushed his top speed to take the lead and Doug S.
picked up two slips to stay with him but then Terry broke his
brakes approaching the next corner.
The middle of the race was marked by mechanical failures and
crashes, especially among the contenders. Don Tatum actually
pulled into second briefly on lap 1 but blew his brakes out in
lap 2 and was forced to retire. At the end of the second lap,
Terry stalled trying to recover from a spin in the 8th corner.
Another contender fell by the side of the track when Scott crashed
in the beginning of the second lap.
Early in lap 2, the GM passed Terry's crippled car to take
the lead and never relinquished it - claiming his first Speed
Circuit championship after seven years of serving as steward.
Darin finished second and Chris third, having moved up from fifth
and eighth on the grid respectively. Franklin finished fourth
after Gerald's engine died accelerating out of the last corner.
Kevin finished fifth after spinning in the last corner. Gerald
was awarded sixth after Doug G., John S., and Paul became involved
in a three-car pile-up in the last corner.
