With four players per game,
Can't Stop was much faster than Greed which used a maximum of
four games/tables. |
In all, 17 copies of the out-of-print
game were brought to service the 100-player field. More copies
will be needed to avoid delays. |
Greed by another name ...
There is hardly a CABS meeting that goes by, where you can't
find a filler game of Can't Stop being played. With
the demise of Greed as the Wednesday late night game,
there was a void in the schedule. Thanks to the generousity
of a Sponsor, Can't Stop seems to have filled that
void with a game that is actually quite similar in theme and
scope.
Our expectations were not too high for a long out of print Parker
Brothers game. But thanks to the CABS library and a few
yard sales, we had six copies of the game on hand for the tournament.
With that in mind, we were hoping to get 24 players.
As Wednesday night came around, I found myself with nothing to
do at 10 p.m. So around 10:20, I decided to get set up
early and see if anyone would be around to chat with. As
I arrived to get the kiosk, assistant GM and fellow Cabbie, Bud
Sauer had the same idea as I. We both headed toward the
ballroom with the kiosk and ended up having several people follow
us. By the time we set up at 10:30. we had eight players
signed up. There were actually a few people playing Can't
Stop already in the ballroom. By 10:40 we had over
30 players and counting. Now we were beginning to suspect
we could have a bigger turnout than planned.
Surprisingly, more and more players appeared and many had copies
of the game. One player even had a homemade copy.
This inspired us for next year and we'll have a few of those
as well. Finally, we ended up with over 100 players and
we were ready to go.
We went with the "Slapshot" seating method and in no
time, the players were off and rolling dice. Most of the
games were finished in about 20 minutes. There were a few
tables who were playing very cautiously, stopping after one or
two rolls. They didn't realize it's called Can't Stop
for a reason. As they were taking much longer than most,
we had to nudge them along. But overall, the tournament
moved along briskly.
The semi's produced Dave Burkey, Jay Fox, Legend Dan Hoffman
and Steve Cameron as the four finalists. Steve closed out
one of the hardest numbers right away and immediately became
the favorite. Alas, the 12's were the only column Steve
would close for the rest of the game. Jay closed out the
7's and the 6's fairly quickly, but then became ultra-conservative.
He left the door open for the others. While Legend Dan
could not get much going, Dave took some risks and was able to
close out three numbers before Jay could finish him off.
The lesson here is, the name of the game is Can't Stop.
When you get in the lead, don't stop!
Everyone seemed to have a good time as was evidenced by the loud
cheers and laughter throughout the event. With the huge turnout,
Can't Stop will definately return next year as a Century
event. Thanks to all who participated and especially those
who brought games
