There were 20 games of six races
each run in three heats. 21 drivers played in multiple heats
including three who raced in all three. |
Eric Freedman appears to be
having a good time ... perhaps because his purple Minardi has
the lead. |
Varooom ......
Formula Motor Racing enjoyed another solid year at WBC.
Sadly, despite steady attendance, it was destined to be penalized
out of the Century lineup due to the GMs failure to provide the
required After Action report when the event Winner made a saving
throw with this account. It will nonetheless need a new GM in
2007 to return.
This may be inspirational to some and depressing to others,
or maybe it will just prove it is better to be lucky than good.
In any case, this was my experience with Formula Motor Racing.
Since I was early for signup to Atlantic Storm I watched
to a FMR heat that was taking place on the tables we were about
to use. I thought to myself that even though I don't own a copy,
maybe i could add it to my collection. It seemed to play a lot
like Roadkill, without the warlike names for the various
nasty things you did to your opponents. It didn't take long for
me to realize that although there were no mortars and bumper
mounted cannons, the players were nonetheless engaging in "attacks"
on each other.
After having my butt handed to me in Atlantic Storm
and a couple other tournaments the following day I was planning
to play Risk. But as tried to located the game and time
was running short, I reconsidered. It could likely end up with
me playing Risk for the remainder of the day. And I felt
less like doing it as the time got closer, and not locating my
copy of the game sealed the deal. So, I went off, in search of
something, faster paced. When another heat of Formula Motor
Racing crossed my path, I signed up and quickly scanned a
borrowed copy of the rules and took my seat to play the game
for the first time..
With a little luck and some tried and true strategies from
Roadkill mixed with some from other multi-round games,
I managed to pull off a win. Not bad for my first try, and it
was fun, probably helped by the fact that I won, and I went off,
not planning to actually return for the semi-finals.
But as it turned out I had another opening in my planned tournaments.
So once again, I signed in and played the semi-final round, and
the luck of the cards was with me and I again won, by a couple
points, much to my surprise, Well you HAVE TO play in the Final
when you make it that far. So, my third game ever, was the WBC
Final.
We had quite a bit of carnage in that deciding game, with
four or more cars knocked out of each race. I somehow managed
to score at least one car every round, usually two. And contrary
to my normal play, was pretty much in the lead the entire game.
When it came down to the last race, I knew that all I needed
to do was prevent my closest challengers from scoring a first
and second, or again score with my own cars and i would win the
game. Despite the other players' repeated attempts to put me
in the rear, i seemed always to have the perfect combination
of cards to quickly get back into scoring position and to split
up all the other cars. And I did end up scoring with both cars
in the concluding race, and winning it all, despite having been
in the lead all six races and having to survive the 'Kill the
leader' effect.
So now I've won, and will feel obligated to play again next
year, to defend the title. I guess I better get a copy of the
game.
