Ok folks, take your seats ... it's
time once again to prove we have entirely too much time on our
hands. Get ready to draft your golfers. Yes, if your skill has
failed you up till now ... fear not ... it's time for the terminally
lucky! |
Now there's a foursome ... Rob Winslow,
Robert Hahn, Jeremy Billones and Dave Metzger try their luck.
Dave is particularly shameless - having won this monumental test
of skill back in 1997 and now he hopes for lightning to strike
twice. |
Skinless ...
2007 was the year of Shigeki Maruyama, the golfer Keith Hunsinger
managed to victory. The question for 2008 was, could Shigeki
again triumph, or would a new golfer earn the wood for his WBC
caddie?
67 participants teed off from the Hopewell room this year,
less than half of whom (32) had played the previous year. That
means there were 35 players present who did not play in 2007.
Members of the BPA Board of Directors followed the recent tradition
of performing poorly, with Andy Lewis and Bruce Reiff 44th at
1 over par, Ken Gutermuth 54th at 2 over par and GM Bruce Monnin
dead last at 5 over par.
After the 75-minute first round was completed on the18 holes
of the 2002 version of the Augusta course, it appeared to once
again be the "Year of Shigeki", as Keith Hunsinger
placed third with Mr. Maruyama and Arthur Field tied for 4th
with the other version of Shigeki available. Rod Weaver led the
field at 9 under par with Scott Verplank, while John Coussis
and Keith Hunsinger came into the clubhouse at -8 and -6 respectively.
That left only one opening in the championship Skins game. Seven
players (Brian Farrelly, Charles Drozd, Jacob Hebner, Rich Meyer,
Arthur Field, Nick Kremer and Grant Wylie) all finished five
under par and went into a sudden death playoff to claim the last
spot for the Skins game final four. These seven players took
on Pebble Beach, where Farrelly and Drozd were the only two to
birdie the first hole. Farrelly advanced after also going under
par on the second hole.
These top four players were then transported to the Lancaster
Host Golf Club for the 12 hole Skins game, where they were allowed
to upgrade their golfers to one of the legends of the game if
they so desired. Rod Weaver and Keith Hunsinger kept their golfers,
Scott Verplank and Shigeki Maruyama. John Coussis upgraded to
Ben Hogan, and Brian Farrelly was pleasantly surprised to find
Jack Nicklaus still available.
For the second year in a row, the Skins game began with the
players halving the first two holes on the course. Ben Hogan
came through for John Coussis by being the only golfer to birdie
the par four third, thus giving John the first three Skins of
the early morning. Rod Weaver and Brian Farrelly followed by
each earning two Skins, Rod on the fifth hole and Brian on the
seventh.
The tension started to build as the eighth, ninth and tenth
holes were all halved, leaving four Skins up for grabs on the
par 3 11th. Weaver, Coussis and Hunsinger all scored par on the
hole, but Jack Nicklaus came through under pressure with the
big birdie to give Farrelly a total of six Skins to earn the
championship. Weaver earned the Skin on the twelfth hole, and
then won the sudden death 13th hole over Coussis to take sole
possession of second place. Last year's champion (Hunsinger and
his beloved Shigeki Maruyama) failed to earn any Skins and settled
for fourth place laurels.

for the last spot in the Skins game. |
The blessed final four. Now
Pastor Hunsinger I can understand ... he has connections and
even won last year. But Coussis? Note he won't let the Rev touch
the fuzzy dice. |
