Old MacDonald had a Farm ...
In its third year at WBC, all three decks included with the
base game were played, one for each heat. In the first heat there
were 19 games played with the E-deck, including two 3-player
games. The highest score and largest margin of victory in Heat
1 went to Sceadeau D'Tela in a 20-point win with 58. The closest
game finished in a tie between Kerrin Addis and Aurora Pack with
34, which was the lowest winning score in the heat. It was a
low scoring heat overall, as Loc Nguyen and Frederick Chang won
with only 34 as well. Seat position seemed to make very little
difference in this heat, as there were four winners from Seat
1, five each from Seats 2 and 3, and six from Seat 4.
The second heat drew 11 4-player games using the I-deck, though
one table agreed to play with the E instead. The highest score
of the heat came from Cary Morris with 56, and the lowest winning
score was again 34, this time by Mark Geary. David Gerson's 23-point
rout with 41 over a second place score of 18 was the largest
margin of victory of the entire tournament, while the closest
game of the heat was a 2-point win by Colin Davis. Wins according
to seat position were not as evenly distributed as in Heat 1,
as there were three winners each from Seats 1 and 2, five from
Seat 3, and none from Seat 4.
The third heat saw 10 games played with the K-deck. The heat's
high scorer was defending Champion Tedd Mullaly with 53, while
the lowest winning score came from David Gerson with 41. Rob
Kircher scored the highest non-winning total of the tournament
in a 49-48 loss to Randy Bueller, while Sceadeau D'Tela again
achieved the heat's highest margin of victory with a 13-point
win. Once again the seat positions were uneven, although this
time it was Seat 2 that produced no winners, while there were
four winners in Seat 1 and three each in Seats 3 and 4.
At the conclusion of the heats there was one three-time winner,
Tedd Mullaly, and ten players with two wins. All 16 qualifiers
were present for the semi-final round, so no alternates advanced.
In the semi-final round using the K-deck, Cary Morris defeated
Colin Davis, Dan Eppolito, and 2009 Euroquest Champion Sceadeau
D'Tela, and Mike Kaltman returned to the Final by defeating Winton
Lemoine, Aran Warszawski, and Hans Kirketerp. The highest point
total of the tournament was scored by Tedd Mullaly with 60, defeating
Nick Page, Randy Bueller, and Matt Peterson. Tedd's win was all
the more impressive considering that three of the cards which
are thought to be among the game's most powerful, namely the
Lover, Reed Hut and Wet Nurse, were each held by one of his opponents.
The fifth and sixth place Laurelists both came from the same
semi-final table, and Geoffrey Pounder's win with 43 over David
Gerson with 42, Rob Kircher with 41 and Loc Nguyen was one of
the closest of the tournament.
In contrast to the third heat, two of the semis and the Final
were all won by the player in the second position, while one
semi each was won from the first and fourth seats.
The Final was thus crewed by two veteran laurelists and two newcomers
to the lofty standings. The Final scoring was as follows:
