blood amongst the kisses
A sweet aspect of John Jacoby's Circus Maximus event is
that he rewards the first driver into each turn with a Hershey's
Kiss. The candies replace the dolphins which were upturned in
the Roman Colosseum to record the number of laps run.
The 20th running of the WBC Circus Maximus as usual
wasn't for the faint of heart. The 95 charioteers engaged in
bloodsport aplenty. Kaarin Englemann had the distinction of having
all of her horses killed a scant nine spaces short of the finish
line - and victory. The Final test on Sunday proved to be just
as brutal for the 15 victors who dared test fate again when ten
heavies appeared to man the gauntlet for the Medium and four
Lights who dared emphasize speed over strength. Four past champions
were among them - having won a preliminary race to qualify for
another attempt at glory.
The lights showed two distinct strategies. Dave Rennert with
a maximum speed of 24 bolted out of the gate as fast as possible
trying to put distance between himself and the murderous pack
of heavies behind. Kelly Krieble's team, on the other hand, played
possum and trailed the pack for two laps. By the start of the
last lap, only Rennert, Githens, Sinigaglio and Hitchings retained
enough speed to form a lead pack, but Hitchings hung back. All
the other non-heavies had died or been reduced to mere shadows
of their former selves - running on life support. The remaining
heavies had been bled by cannibalistic attacks on their own and
were hanging back to be lapped and given another shot at the
leaders as they passed through their ranks.
Suddenly Krieble made his break and blew past the first gauntlet
of wounded heavies. In the final turn Hitchings hit Rennert with
a double whammy successful attack on both wheel and horse. The
luckless leader flipped and was killed as he was dragged over
a wreck. That's gotta hurt! This left two-time champ Githens'
Heavy in the lead, but successive attacks by Hitchings and John
Tighe, Jr sent one of Josh's steeds to McDonalds. Josh, torn
by the desire for a Big Mac, failed to cut the animal loose and
fell further behind. It was then that Frank Sinigaglio's Heavy
flew by the finish line to claim his second title. Two moves
later, Krieble - surviving five wheel hits - creaked over the
line to claim second. Meanwhile, Josh was earning the nickname
"dull knife" as he failed for a third time to cut loose
his menu entree, enabling Evan Hitchings to hobble across the
line for third. Such was the reduced speed of the walking wounded
that Josh was able to finally cut loose and coax his remaining
barbecue candidates across the line to claim fourth. Leading
the blood drenched heavy pack in its limp to the finish was the
father and son duo of John Tighe Jr and Sr who claimed fifth
and sixth respectively.

A ticket to the Final awaits the winner
of this Preliminary race in one of the three qualifying heats. |
With only one race on Sunday, the
Final still draws a crowd to the Colosseum. |
