Completing the Family Laurels
Medici's semi-finals numbered six ex-champs vying for
spots in the Final. The semi-finals proved to be far better games
than the Preliminaries with a uniform five players per board
- nearly all of them well vetted - and the Final as well. Last
year's runaway winner, Robert Drozd, and runner-up Doug Galullo
found themselves in an early rematch with the same result but
the 2001 champ at least succeeded in narrowing the margin of
victory as he he held the defending champion to a 4-point spread
this time around. Cliff Ackman barely edged Charles Faella by
2 to gain his entry into the Final, while Jon Anderson had a
relatively easy 11-point victory to advance. Sue Cornett surprised
'04 champion Peter Staab with a 4-point victory over 2009 finalist
Fred Minard. Characteristically, while claiming to be losing,
her husband, Jeff Cornett, managed to slip past Aurora Pack by
2, while inaugural champion Kevin Wojtasczyk had the easiest
time of it. Kevin's 12-point victory was the largest spread in
the hotly contested semi-final round.
The Final, which numbered three ex-champs among the six players,
was anticlimactic compared to the preceding round. It started
with a high bid on a 5 metal and a 5 porcelain. Sue Cornett won
the purchase for 15. Sue and Robert Drozd quickly filled their
boats in the first round, while Jeff Cornett waited patiently
for the right time to bid, which turned out to be never. Jeff
had convinced himself early on that it was a 4-player Final and
alluded to it several times. This had to confuse the other five
players. After waiting patiently for everyone to acquire goods,
he lucked into a 3 silk and 2 spice boat with a very high total
value for which he paid nothing. Jeff had a commanding lead of
approximately 30 points, entering the second round of bidding.
Jeff waited patiently again. All wondered if Jeff would actually
bid because he did not actually spend any money on a bid until
midway through the second round. By then the matter had been
decided. It was Jeff Cornett in a landside claiming his second
Medici title to tie Harald Henning with two apiece as
the only multi-year champions. Defending champion, Robert Drozd,
came up 30 points short to claim second and Sue Cornett completed
the family set as the fourth Cornett to earn Medici laurels.
