Ballroom B is emptied and the tables
marked in preparation for a TTR heat which will soon fill the
room in record time. |
Although Jay Fox has never won a TTR
title his ability to make his way to the Finals in a 200-player
event year after year is unsurpassed. |
Still a bridesmaid ...
Ticket to Ride is a big favorite and is one of the
largest tournaments at WBC with over 200 players each of the
last three years. The first heat had 124 people happily playing
on 31 tables, with an even 100 in each of the other two heats.
Despite the monumental challenges this posed, a revised seating
system had everyone checked in and playing within 20 minutes.
After the Preliminaries had done their thing, we had ten double
winners. Scores fluctuated wildly from the teens to a high score
in the 170s for a 1910 game. For the second year in a row, Henry
Dove had the best single game score with 179, making eight out
of eight tickets and collecting the Most Tickets bonus.
Due to numbers we had to play four 3-player games in the semi-final.
Three of the 2009 finalists played each other; Jay Fox - back
from his Paris excursion in the recent DoW world championships,
Steve Shambeda and defending champ Kyle Greenwood with Jay coming
out the victor this time. Fifth and sixth place wood went to
Mark McCandless and Raphael Lehrer based on the strongest runner-up
finishes in their respective semi-finals. Raphael's edge over
Lisa Sutherland who finished 7th was just .2 points; 107.78 to
101.58.
Our four finalists were Anni Foasberg, Grant LaDue, Jay Fox,
and Lori Miskoff. Jay played with his set of silver trains from
the world championships to add some cool "bling" to
the board.
In the Final, the west coast got built up so fast there was
much jockeying for routes before any branching out got started.
It was a really fast game, taking only 45 minutes. Anni Foasberg
won with 129 and tied with Lori for most tickets made. Jay again
finished second for the second straight year - no mean feat in
an event with over 200 entrants - with 118. Grant was third with
100 and the longest route and Lori brought up the rear with 93.
This year I had two ladies help with check-in and sign on
to be my "Conductors" for next year. Sarah Beach and
Nikki Bradford did a great job sorting the players as they came
in and we got the crowds seated and playing in record time. Well
done, ladies! Thanks all, every heat and playoff game went great.
Lots of kids and adults alike had a great time with Ticket
to Ride.

Grant LaDue is another wargamer dabbling
in the "dark arts" of euro games ... only to be denied
by Anni Foasburg. |
GM Claire Brosius is down to the easy
part now - having reduced a field of 206 players to these four
finalists. |
