Move Over Dan Henry ...
A total of 66 games were played during the second year of
the 5/3 swiss elim format, down seven from last year's 73 games.
Bid's for the IJN have continued to increase; this year non-zero
bid games featured an average bid of 4.525 PoC. Despite the increase
in bids, the IJN still managed to win more than two of every
three games. This year there were 45 IJN wins (68%), 20 Allied
wins (30%), and one tie (2%).
After five swiss rounds undefeated Andy Gardner was the top
seed going into the elimination rounds for the second straight
year. Next came Ed Paule, John Pack, and Ed Menzel with identical
4-1 records. With four of the eight positions filled; the final
four spots were determined by comparing the strength of schedules
of the seven players with 3-2 records. Daniel Blumentritt, Patrick
Richardson, John Sharp, and Mike Kaye advanced while Alan Applebaum,
Charles Drozd, and Jim Eliason were left on the outside looking
in. In the second year of the new format, five (Andy, both Ed's,
Pat, and Mike) repeated their performances from the previous
year to advance to the Elimination Rounds.
In the Quarter-Finals, upsets were the theme; the #1 seed
was the only "Top Seed" to advance (#1 Gardner's Allies
defeated #8 Kaye's IJN, #7 Sharp's Allies defeated #2 Paule's
IJN, #6 Richardson's Allies defeated #3 Pack's IJN, while #5
Blumentritt's IJN defeated #4 Menzel's Allies).
The semi-final round saw Dan Blumentritt take the Allies vs.
Andy Gardner for a bid of 6.0 PoC. The game went seven turns
before Andy finally prevailed by removing Dan's patrollers from
the Hawaiian Islands. The other game saw John Sharp take the
Allies vs. Patrick Richardson for a bid of 5.5 PoC; after four
turns John's Allied position was such that Patrick conceded.
The Final left undefeated Andy Gardner vs. John Sharp. Andy
bid 5.5 PoC to play the IJN and things started well with only
two ships escaping Pearl and the Hermes being crippled by the
I-Boat. Turn 2 saw momentum swing back to John as he survived
the turn while only losing the Saratoga. Turn 3 saw a prolonged
battle in Hawaii with Andy losing four CV's but John eventually
withdrawing with his Allied forces down four LBA to three LBA.
Turn 4 saw John lose two CV's in the Marshalls and a third in
US Mandate. Everything went Andy's way on Turn 5 as John's last
two CV's were sunk and both Marines turned back. With no holes
for his Turn 6 reinforcements John conceded and Andy pulled into
a tie with Dan Henry as WBC's only two threee-time champs.
