The Colosseum fills again. |
And they're off ... |
|
|
Brian Conlon, George Worley
and Scott Sirianna (obviously a discerning fan of championship
teams) wait for the third heat. |
Ken Samuel, Paul Weintraub,
GM Jake Jacoby, Angela Collinson and Scott Siriana watch the
ponies frolic in a relatively bloodless Final. |
blood amongst the kisses
A sweet aspect of John Jacoby's Circus Maximus event is
that he rewards the first driver into each turn with a Hershey's
Kiss. The candies replace the dolphins which were upturned in
the Roman Colosseum to record the number of laps run.
Another bloodbath was expected for the 21st Circus Maximus
Final. Twelve of the 13 qualifiers who had paid their dues by
winning a preliminary heat had appeared with eight heavies, two
mediums and two lights on the card. Angela Collinson, John Tighe
Jr & Sr, Josh Githens, Scott Sirianna, Paul Wientraub, Kevin
Hacker and Evan Hitchings were positively salivating as they
eyed the nervous Brian Wool and Tony Musella who had the audacity
to appear with light chariots. Hoping to slip under the radar
as the heavies fed on the lights were Shawn Dorsey and Ken Samuel
who played both ends against the middle with their medium rides.
Consequently the crowd was subdued as the first two laps proved
relatively tame with no chariots flipped or horses sent to that
great stable in the sky. This was not for want of trying, but
only four heavies successfully attacked the horses - scoring
a total of one hit! The crowd started watching the dueling popcorn
vendors in hopes of catching a glimpse of some real action. But
when they entered the backstretch of the last lap, the nerf hubcaps
were replaced with sharp stainless steel.
With two-time champion Josh leading, followed by Shawn and
Angella, 2005 champ John Jr moved into third by skewering a horse
on the lead chariot for the race's first kill. The next chit
let the lady charioteer show her stuff and do one better as she
moved into the lead by killing two horses - one each from John
Jr and Shawn. John Sr took advantage of this sudden carnage to
move into second, but his chariot was two faster than the amazon
could muster on her best day. Josh meanwhile, or Chief Dull Knife
as he was soon affectionately dubbed, spent the next six turns
trying to cut loose from his dog food concession. On the last
turn, with John Sr drawing even with the slower Collinson, she
lashed for five extra to cross the line first. John Sr, needing
a 4 or better lash to win, discovered he had the Victoria's Secret
silk whip which generated only two extra speed. And so, Angela
won her first CMS title and the filly's second shield overall.
There were only three steeds killed in the race with Angela
sending two of them to their reward. No chariots flipped in the
tamest race anyone could remember and the Circus crowned a female
champion for the first time ever. The NOW went nuts! Oh, the
shame!

The popularity of Jake's circus has
stretched the color palette for carts and steeds. |
The "horses" are starting
to look a tad strange. Do these race or fight the Christians? |
