Twotime champ Paul Fletcher falls
to Robert Frisby. Paul is five years removed from his last Anzio
title while Robert made his second straight Final appearance. |
Mark McCandless finally reached the

Year
12 of the Renaissance
Venerable grognard Tom Oleson once again devoted his efforts,
time, dedication, and innovation to the Anzio experience
- taking on all comers at every opportunity. During the Open
Swiss Phase preliminaries a total of 26 games were played by
21 different participants. At 5:00 PM on Friday the four highest
scoring players entered into the single elimination portion of
the tournament. Those four players were: Mark McCandless - 54
points, Tom Oleson - 39, Robert Frisby - 27 and Bill Scott -
24.
The Play-offs:
The 15-Turn Basic Game was played in the semis. The initial
invasion by Bill Scott's Americans on Sep II came ashore at Terrecina
while the Brits and Canadians landed at Taranto and Reggio. McCandless
delayed the allies moving up from the south end while his Germans
hit the Yanks with most of their power around Terrecina. Low
die rolls on the initial attacks by Mark forced Bill to fork
over the re-roll chit, after which Mark again rolled low. The
Americans lasted only three turns before the port was destroyed
on Sep IV. The allies captured much ground, but the destruction
of the first invasion is always a problem. Bill landed the second
invasion at Rome on Nov I, capturing Rome. The German reaction
was devastating with the Allies thrown back into the sea on Nov
II. Bill resigned at the end of the turn having captured only
Salerno, Naples and Foggia.
The other semi was a rematch of the 2010 Final. Tom's initial
invasion again came ashore at Naples while the Brits and Canadians
did their thing at Taranto and Reggio. The Germans could not
snuff out the Naples invasion, but the allies were unable to
make much progress against the solid defensive line of the Germans.
Bad dice by Tom resulted in little progress and few hits on the
Germans. Tom's second invasion at Vasto on Nov I tested Robert
and allowed the allies to capture Termoli, but Tom's bad dice
got worse and he lost every attack for four straight turns. At
the end, the allies held Salerno, Naples, Foggia and Termoli,
which was close but not good enough, so this time Robert's Germans
won the day.
The Final:
For the first time in years, the Final would be contested
without a former champion. It was also a rematch of a 2010 semi-final
won by Robert. Frisby's allies invaded at Naples on Sep II while
supporting landings occurred at Taranto and Reggio. Mark's Germans
vigorously attempted to crush the invasion before the units moving
up the boot could strengthen the allied toe-hold, but Robert
was able to hold out. In classic style, the allies then slugged
their way into Foggia and Termoli, while holding onto Salerno
and Naples. Robert needed one more victory hex to defeat Mark
again. The allied second invasion landed at Anzio on Dec I. The
Germans counterattacked vigorously while holding the allies at
bay along the Cassino line. At the start of the last allied turn
on Dec IV, Robert was still in control of Anzio, but his troops
were adjacent to strong German units. The allied attacks to hold
in place were unsuccessful forcing his army to retreat into the
Mediterranean. The game ended with the allies in Foggia, Termoli,
Salerno and Naples. Thus Mark avenged his 2010 loss while securing
his first Anzio championship and third overall.
