Bob Wicks, Harry Flawd still sporting an Avaloncon t-shirt, and Ewan McNay plot their advancement.

Raymond Stakenas, Pete "woe is me" Stein, John Keating and Rich Curtin all plead their innocence.

Laughing at the Cold War ...

Three players won two heats each; unlike previous years, where the second win came on heat 3 or 4, these were the only two heats they played. Two others became eligible when they won their first heat, and the last qualifier won his second heat and placed 2nd in his third. The GM was only able to achieve first alternate status, but managed to slip in when one qualifier didn't show. (The Final was slightly delayed while another of the qualifiers attempted to find Host B, but the GM found him wandering near the Ballrooms and pointed him in the right direction.)

The Final started in the usual fashion, with Apparatchik dying on the first turn. The new Party Chief, Purgemoff, was controlled by John Keating, who was able to get one wave and one failed wave with him before leaving office in Turn 3. Richard Curtin took over at this point, keeping Shootemdedsky in office all the way
through Turn 6; this scored him a wave, a failed wave, a second wave and a card play to put the Party Chief in the Sanitarium. Shootemdedsky finally kicked on Turn 7, bringing Krakemheds to the Party Chief office and giving three-time champion Steve Cuccaro his first and only wave.

On Turn 8, what hopes Steve had were soon dashed as the Party Chief was convicted of treason (Steve had another vote in the Politburo, but he was sent to the Sanitarium for the phase). The health dice then killed off Satin (at Defense) and Mischif (at Industry). Before the Funeral Commission could begin, the KGB
Head Eatstumuch was assassinated; the Foreign Minister Bungaloff was accused of the crime but found innocent in a rare display of Russian justice. (Phil Yaure had 10+ Influence on Eatstumuch, but had never visibly controlled him...)

The remaining 2nd Level candidates were: an ill Manjak at Ideology, a sick Protzky at Economy, and a healthy Boremtodev at Sport. The GM had influence on Protzky, so to force the issue he sent the Foreign Minister down to the People. Unfortunately for Steve, John was in control of Manjak, and had some influence
on Boremtodev. Even more unfortunately for John, Bob Jamelli turned out to have the most influence on this new Party Chief. Having arranged the Politburo to his liking, and the other players having used all their Intrigue cards in this very active Turn 8, Bob went on to wave twice and to win on Turn 10 when the Politburo
could not be filled. Thus ended a 14-year drought for Bob between his first WBC shield and his second.
