GM Doug Galullo and his finalists
gather for the 13th Medici finale with Scott Cornett successfully
defending the family title. |
Completing the Family Laurels
Despite having three heats and 21 preliminary games, Medici
fell to its lowest attendance ever as this old classic may be
nearing the end of the line. In the first heat, the largest boat
I have ever seen was recorded at 29 points and apparently it
was free. Talk about a bargain! Otherwise, the heats were uneventful.
New faces manned the Final this year with no returning finalists
and only two former laurelists in view. Scott Cornett easily
defeated former champions Carmen Petruzelli and Doug Galullo
to advance to the Final. Scott slow played the semi-final waiting
until the end to fill his boat with free goods. The latter were
good enough to carry him to a huge lead after the first round.
In Round 2 Doug and Carmen battled ttrying to secure the commodities
necessary to gain ground but they never materialized. Scott maintained
his lead in the last round and never looked back, breezing into
the Final with a 30-point victory over Doug - a margin of victory
which cost the 2001 champ his seat at the Final. The other two
semi-finals proved closer and advanced a pair of winner-runners-up
absent from the laurelist rolls: Jason Long, Chris Grech, Marc
Beauregaurd and Eyal Mozes.
Goods were at a premium during the commodities shortage resulting
from commodities being discarded. Scott and Marc were tied for
second with 53 points after Round 1. Both were right on the heels
of Jason's 56 points. Chris and Eyal were 20 points farther back.
In Round 2 Scott closed the gap to two points while Marc slipped
five points behind Jason. Eyal made a run at the leaders, to
finish the round only 11 behind Jason. Chris became a long shot
at this point, falling 30 points off the pace. In Round 3 Scott
eked out the slimmest of victories by a point over Jason to become
the third Cornett to win the WBC Medici title and completed
the 4 for 4 performance of the Cornett family in the Medici
laurels list. It was his sixth title after an absence of several
years.
