With only one former champ in attendance, the way was clear for Robert Frisby to score his first Anzio title once two-time champ Paul Fletcher faltered.

Vince Meconi's Allies were plagued by bad dice from the start and unable to make progress against Greg Tanner's German doubled defensive line in the semifinals.

Year 13 of the Renaissance sans Icon

This years Anzio experience was lacking without the presence of venerable grognard Tom Oleson. During the Open Swiss Phase preliminaries, there was a notable decline in the number of participants and games played for at least two reasons -- the conditions in Lampeter and the absence of the iconic Mr. Oleson. The players advancing to the 15-turn Basic Game elimination rounds were Robert Frisby, Greg Tanner, Vince Meconi and Ed Witkowski. None of the four had won an Anzio title and only two of them had Anzio laurels.

In the first semifinal, Witkowski's Allies came ashore at Salerno on Sep II. Frisby's Germans attacked the hex just north of Salerno at 4-1, but rolled a 6. The allies escaped disaster, but the Germans earned the re-roll chit, which was salted away for the duration. The allies gained little ground, rolling a plethora of unsuccessful 1-1's, but they did take Foggia. After going nowhere, the allies invaded Mondragone on Dec II and took Naples. The Germans then fell back to the Volturno and Fortore Rivers. One more set of fruitless attacks and the allies threw in the towel having no chance of taking two more victory hexes. Robert returned to the Final for the second straight year.

In the other semifinal, Meconi's Allies also came ashore Sep II at Salerno. Tanner's Germans formed a line of primarily doubled or tripled positions and the allies were unable to make any progress against this solid defensive line. Bad dice by Vince made things worse, resulting in horrible losses. The allies had to take an attack holiday on Oct III in order to rebuild an attack force, but the Germans got to full strength on Oct IV and began to accumulate replacements. After Vince rearmed, the Allies launched a few more turns of terrible attacks before conceding on Nov IV with a badly attritted army and the Germans at full strength. Greg moved into the Final for the first time.

Greg bid three Erzatz replacements for the Germans, but Robert gave away four to win the right to defend Italy in the Final. Greg's Allies invaded at Termoli. Robert vigorously attempted to crush the invasion before the units moving up the boot could strengthen the allied foothold. Termoli was lost to the Germans on Oct I, destroying the port. The Allies also lost the 36 Infantry Division and the Rangers, while the rest of the invasion force evacuated to Taranto. In classic style, Greg slugged his way into Foggia and Naples, while grabbing Salerno on the way. On Nov IV, the allies recaptured Termoli. Greg needed one more victory hex to cap his excellent comeback. The Allied second invasion landed at Terracina on Dec III with an unsuccessful 1-1 attack that required retreats into the swamp to the north and the hills to the southeast. Robert sent three German divisions into the hills overlooking Terracina preventing a successful attack there on Dec IV and leaving Greg one victory hex short. The game ended with the allies in Foggia, Termoli, Salerno and Naples.

Congratulations to Robert Frisby for earning his first Anzio title.

Ed Witkowski's Allies were unable to break Robert Frisby's German line in the semifinals.

Robert Frisby and Greg Tanner met in the Final vying for their first Anzio title.
