Shortage ...
In 2011 during the first qualifying round, the largest boat
I have ever seen was recorded at 29 and went for free. Talk about
a bargain! 2012 saw several such amazing sights. In a preliminary
game, Rob Seulowitz debated whether to flip a third card. He
had already flipped a Blue 5 and a Green 5. The internal debate
ended with Rob flipping over the Gold 10. Virginia Colin had
her chance and bid 27. Fred Minard decided to take it for 29,
recording the largest bid for three cards ever seen by this GM.
During that round, Virginia eventually spent just 2 for a full
boat. The moral of the story is that at the end of that 5-player
game, Fred finished with 69 points and Virginia with 62; neither
strategy worked. After that Rob turned over zero cards time after
time, so he has been nicknamed the "zero man". During
the third heat at Rob Drozd's game, the Gold card was discarded
because it came up with a 0 and a 1. I can't say I have seen
that happen before. Usually it has some value towards the overall
boat total.
The semifinals advanced four past champions (2008's Carmen
Petruzzelli, 2009's Robert Drozd, and 2001's Doug Galullo). The
fourth finalist was Josh Githens -- without a MED laurel to his
name. Want to venture a guess who won?
The Final started with a shortage. In fact the headlines for
the game would read "SHORTAGE" in capital letters.
Seven cards were discarded. This left Carmen two short of a full
boat and Doug one short. Josh was "sitting pretty"
with 77 points and a 16-point lead over Doug. Robert had 46 points
and Carmen 37. The second round started much the same as the
first, with a shortage. We immediately passed six cards out of
play. The shortage caused intense bidding. This helped Josh as
he cruised into Round 3 with a 20-point lead over Doug with 74
points, and Robert with 64. Carmen was a distant fourth with
32 points. Would Round 3 be any different? The answer is no.
We again ended with a shortage and Josh continued on autopilot
to an easy victory. The final scores were Josh 122, Robert 88,
Doug 82, and Carmen 50.
