Warriors of God saw its field size drop by a third,
likely due to increased competition from more Monday events.
Once again, Terry Coleman's demo session brought in several new
players. 22 players then appeared for Round 1 tournament action
(with the GM reserving himself as a potential eliminator). Just
barely over half of these people brought a copy of the game,
so once again none had to be turned away. The GM has purchased
an extra copy of the game to help diminish this potential problem
in the future.
Play balance was perfect this year, with the French winning ten
of 19 games. The French also won both semifinals, but the English
archers triumphed in the Final. Two winners opted for other events,
leaving nine players still in contention. One was defeated by
the GM in an eliminator capacity, leaving four players to battle
for the available plaques in Round 3.
In the first semifinal, Matthew Beach won as the French against
Derek Landel (who finished fourth place last year). At one point
the only territory controlled by Derek's English was the French
capital of Ile-de-France. It didn't take long afterwards for
Matthew to reach the 30 VP needed for the automatic victory.
The other semifinal featured Keith Hunsinger's French outlasting
the 2011 runner-up, Gregory Hultgren. This game could be summed
up as the triumph of the old men. While the English nobles succumbed
to early deaths on the continent, Keith's French nobles led long
and productive lives. Two of the best French leaders (with bravery
levels of 3 and 4) survived for the maximum 60 years to serve
Keith's victorious effort.
However, the Final proved to be a swift victory for young Matthew's
English. He built an early gunner and snuck it down into Ile-de-France
with the 2-bravery leader Edward III. Keith sensed a losing battle
and hoped to win the siege, but Matthew made the roll and never
gave back the French capital. The French deficit snowballed from
there, earning Matthew the victory.
Besides the championship shield, Matthew also received a $40
gift certificate from Multi-Man Publishing. Keith was awarded
a $30 certificate for his runner-up performance. Derek took third
place and the $20 gift certificate, while Greg received a $10
certificate to go with his gray fourth place plaque.
