16 Years in the Making ...
This surprisingly deep game started as High Bid from
3M back in the 60's and reappeared as The Collector under
Avalon Hill, before being republished as Auction. It retains
its slot at WBC by virtue of the Legacy rules which grant exceptions
to the normal rules of event attrition.
Nine winners were present after two heats, allowing three
runner-ups to advance to the semi's. This enabled eventual finalists
Andy "Jump For" Joy as well as your GM and reporter
to slip into the semifinals. In my semi, roommate and CABS Executive
Minion Jeff Mullet got his wish during the random seating to
be on my left. Unfortunately for him on her first turn Natasha
Metzger sold her Rare Miscellany and the bank refused to pay.
This gave moi a third one when I bought it in the subsequent
bank auction. The next item up for sale was another Rare Miscellany
which I snapped up. I was able to sell just enough to hit the
$7500 mark and advance in record time. With the quick resolution,
the best runnerup score was not going to come from this group.
Andy Joy similarly dominated his group, leaving them with
low runner-up scores as well - assuring that he would be the
only advancer from his table.
The third semi went longer and allowed Ken Gutermuth and Vasilli
Kyrkos to duel for second behind world traveler, and table winner,
Aran Warszawski. Sadly, for all especially the finalists
Ken had a mere $190 more than Vasilli and squeaked into
the Final while saving his best karma for last.
Ken took the seat to my left and Aran to my right. A Buyer's
Card came up early and I fell on my sword to keep Ken from getting
it. Unfortunately, the sales dice were not kind and left me with
under $900 not enough to stop Ken if one of his sets came
due. Sadly, two turns later one of his needed items indeed appeared
and I was not flush enough to stop it. That chore fell to Aran
who did not deny him or push Ken far enough. Ken was able to
sell and claim his first Auction plaque in 16 years to
finally claim his yellow Boardmaster level while ending his 3-year
WBC losing streak. Congrats Ken!
