Ladies are much in evidence at Carcassonne ... 39 of 'em - but they were still outnumbered 4-1

Reigning Caesar Randy Buehler heads a row of Carcassonnians in a Heritage room full of them.

The Crowds Return ...

A plethora of Carcassonians entered the tournament this year! We saw an increase in participation of 34% over last year's attendance as the return to multi-player games and heats drew a record crowd.

Of notable mention, Destry Usner won all three qualifying heats only to fall to Ed Beach in a very odd semifinal game. There is a picture on the WBC Facebook page of the bizarre opening, which caused two cloisters to be discarded!

The Final was closely contested with only one point separating the top three players at 61-61-60.

In a 4-player game, the fourth player gets one less tile to play than the rest. In a 5-player game, the first player gets one extra tile. At this time, we will not be adding any play balance provisions. The 2013 statistics do not merit adjusting the rules, but we will continue to monitor the data from year to year. With regards to 4-player games, players starting fourth won as often as players going first.

33% of players in 4-player games had no meeples left at the end of the game. These players won 51% of the games. In conclusion, "People, people who need meeples, are the luckiest people in the world." So...... use your meeples!

In 2014, the semifinal will be limited to 16 participants. Qualifiers will be ranked using a new tiebreaker that will be inserted after "Most wins" and before "Win in first heat entered" that will be based on a "points" system. Participants will receive 1 point for each heat entered, 1 point for each player you finish ahead of in each heat, five bonus points for finishing 1st, two for finishing 2nd, and one point if you bring the game and it is used. We would like all 4-player games, but if we are limited by game supply, we will have 5-player games as needed. Please note that 5-player games will score an additional point for each place. Make sure you bring your copy of the game and enter early! More copies of the game mean more 4-player games and less 5-player games. The more heats you enter, the better your odds of qualifying for advancement.

We will schedule the semifinal/Final for later on Saturday so results of the qualifying heats can be tabulated and posted on the kiosk.

Ray Stakenas is a many of many talents ... Up Front, Football Strategy, Carcassonne ... the very definition of jack of all trades ...

Dan Strock and Romain Jacques play the gateway game. Dan takes strategy lessons from his daughter Carolyn, the 2010 champ.

Sean McCulloch - not Caesar Buehler - advanced from this semifinal but that won't cut him any slack back in Columbus.

GM Jennifer Visocnik with her finalists which include CDW designer Ed Beach ... who knew he was a closet Euroweenie?
