Three in a row!
Union Pacific ran once again as a non-stop Swiss tournament
held on Monday afternoon. Attendance rose slightly from last
year, but unfortunately the amount of games brought decreased.
This caused some shuffling to a single 5-game table and having
your humble GM sitting out of the event until the third heat.
 Scores
across the rounds were very close. In the 19 games played over
the tournament, the average winning score was 122. Mike Stanley
hit $163 in his 3-player Round 3 game to lead all scorers. Francois
de BelleFeuille went for $133 to pace the 4-player games.
In defense of his title, Curt Collins II won his first two
games and scored enough points in Round 3 to take the first seat
at the Final table. Dan Mathias also won twice to take the second
seat while Cliff Ackman and Francois de BelleFeuille earned their
seats on tie-breakers.
In the Final, The El Paso/Rio Grande (green) company got rolling
early as well as the Sioux Falls Royal Blue. Mathias took control
of the EPRG and rolled it up to $14. The Sioux Falls got to 10,
when Collins took advantage of first place in the Union Pacific
to balance out his other firsts in the United Mexican White (which
maxed at 7) and Miami Southern (which maxed at 14) to score $132.
Dan's first in the EPRG helped push him to a second place score
of $107. Ackman's $105 and de BelleFeuille's $92 rounded out
the scoring.
With his third win in a row, and fourth overall in the last
five years, Curt has put together a dynastic run reminiscent
of the Yankees or Celtics in their heyday. That may mean he has
to watch out for a bloop single in the UNP Final next
year.
Please keep two things in mind for the UNP event next
year. Bringing games is going to be a must. The last thing I
want to do is turn people away (especially young gamers) but
if we don't have the sets to play, there isn't much I can do.
I want to thank and acknowledge Perrianne Lurie and Scott Saccenti
who both stepped away from the tournament after Round 1 but allowed
us to use their games for the subsequent rounds. Without their
help, this event would not have had the number of games played
that it did. Secondly, tie breakers will get a facelift next
year with the number of UNP shares going down on the list. Refer
to the 2014 event preview for more information on that.
