19 players arrived early in the week to refight the Hundred
Years War scenario of Monday's Warriors of God tournament.
In all, the war would be refought 17 times that day. Terry Coleman's
teaching session was followed by 18 participants appearing for
first round duty (with the GM sitting out to provide a future
eliminator if needed). Just over half of these people brought
a copy of the game with them, so once again the first round was
a random matchup of game owners vs non-game owners.
Last
year the French won ten of 19 games played. This year the English
won 63% of the games, including both semifinals, before the French
took their revenge in the Final.
The first semifinal featured one relatively quick player, Peter
Stein, against far and away the fastest player in the field,
Dave Long. In a game that was a pleasure to watch for the speed
at which it moved along, Dave's English jumped out to an early
lead which kept growing throughout the match. Peter tried a few
gambles to attempt a comeback, but none of them panned out and
Dave moved on to the Final.
The other semifinal saw Philip Yaure oppose Derek Landel, last
year's third place laurelist. By the middle of the game, Derek's
English were able to work their way into Paris. It took three
more turns to successfully roll for control, after which Philip's
French cause was lost.
Derek bid a VP to play the English in the Final. Two of Dave's
three French leaders died on the first turn, and Derek used the
opportunity to open a 7-VP lead after Turn 5. The English controlled
most of the British Isles and the coast of France, but Dave was
having great success gaining control of the French interior.
On Turn 7 Derek failed a 50-50 chance to take Ile-de-France by
siege, while Dave used the turn to control Wales and take a 2-VP
lead.
Turn 8 saw a board situation which was a first for participants
and GM alike. Every non-neutral area of the board was controlled
by one of the players. Dave's French controlled the majority
of these spaces, and grew his French lead to 11 VP. Derek took
one more shot at Ile-de-France on Turn 9, but when his 33% siege
chance failed, Dave's French lead grew to 17 VP. It grew again
to 23 on Turn 10 and 29 on turn 11, causing Derek to concede.
Dave's win just proves that championship play does not have to
be slow. Quick and decisive play a la Speedy Gonzales style led
to his domination in each round of the tournament. Besides the
championship plaque, Dave also received a $30 gift certificate
from Multi-Man Publishing. Derek was awarded a $20 certificate
for his runner-up performance. Of the semifinalists, Philip took
home the third place plaque and Peter received the $10 gift certificate.
