Joan of Arc proves to be fireproof ...

20 players arrived early at the convention to take on the Hundred Years War scenario of the Warriors of God tournament. 10 players appeared for Sunday night's Mulligan action, with Terry Coleman, Pete Stein, Derek Landel, Rob Winslow and the GM earning byes into Monday's second round action.

Terry Coleman's Monday morning teaching session was followed by 16 participants contesting the first round. The French side was dominant in the opening rounds, winning nine of the 13 games played. However, once action progressed to the last ten players, the results moderated with the English winning five of the remaining nine games.

The round of 10 saw Rob Winslow, Terry Coleman, Greg Hultgren and Philip Yaure earn big wins as the English, often using an aggressive English strategy of buying Gunners on the first two turns and launching a Turn 2 strike on Ile-de-France. A successful siege soon led to doom for French players who were unprepared to counter the move. Defending champion David Long earned the only French victory this round.

The next two games saw the revenge of the French, with Coleman and Hultgren punishing the English. Hultgren next used the French to foil Long's title defense, setting up a Final match against 2010 champion Coleman. Hultgren accepted Terry's bid of two VP for the English and the two Californians set about making war in Lancaster.

With early turn maneuvering, Terry was able to reverse the impact of his 2 VP bid. For a short season, the English took the lead as a captured French leader gave the English VP count a temporary boost. Then Terry's dice turned against him. He made roll after roll for control of areas without success. This combined with a minor plague killing a disproportionate number of English leaders for two turns resulted in the VP marker changing back to French blue. Over the next few turns, Greg acquired his core areas in the center of France resulting in the victory counter slowly advancing towards a French victory.

Terry's English made repeated attempts to break the French core. Terry was even able to capture two French leaders, but with hygiene in British prisons being sub-standard these leaders died upon arrival before giving the English a single victory point. By Turn 10 the French had a 7-point lead. During that turn, Joan of Arc was able to trap two British leaders outside of Burgundy, leaving them no way to retreat. One died in battle and the other was captured. That result, followed by another major plague which decimated only English leaders, convinced Terry's English to call it quits. Joan and her family were granted nobility by Charles VII as a reward for her actions as Greg's French claimed victory.
