Blocks & Blades ...

David vs Goliath ...

The first round used the pod system where we divided into 4-player groups with each player playing each of the other players in their group round robin in the Bagradas scenario. The best record in the group advanced automatically and the best runners-up filled the remainder of the 16 available slots. Side selection was handled by players bidding victory banners. Carthage held a slight advantage 26-25-1. Seems pretty balanced so this one will be back next year.

The second round was again fought in pods with the battle of Castulo. Only the winner of each 4-player pod would advance to the semis. Rome won overall 15-8-1.

The semifinals were conducted as 2-game matches, playing both sides of a battle against the same opponent. The battle was Bagradas River from the third expansion. In the first pairing, champion Bill O'Neal faced Derek Landel. Derek took the first game 5-3 as the Romans, but Bill also won as the Romans by a 5-1 margin to advance on total banners 8-6. In the other bracket, Matt Bacho faced Joe Harrison and neither had a laurel to his name - yet. Both were new to the CCA semifinals so we were guaranteed one newcomer reaching the Final. Joe won the first game as the Romans 5-1 and also took the second game 5-3 to advance easily.

The Final would be contested at Sotium from the second expansion. Three-time champ Bill O'Neal had missed laurels just once in nine years. It looked like a David vs Goliath mismatch. It was ... Goliath never knew what hit him. Bill played the Romans in the first game and lost 6-3. Advantage David. Bill conceded defeat when Joe tied the second game 4-4, so a new champion has joined the ranks of CCA - Joe Harrison. So much for experience!

There will be one change in format next year as I was almost put in a quandary this year as we had several games called for time resulting in tie banners. The almost quandary was whether a 2-1 record was better than a 1-0-2. This will be solved next year as we will use soccer scoring - 3 pts for a win and 1 pt for tie.
