All Tied Up ...
Amun-Re drew 67 highly qualified participants to its tables this year. 18 Preliminary winners, including six who posted double wins made for a broad group of potential semifinalists. We wanted to have an all-winners semifinal, but 20 participants makes for a better group of 5-player games, so we set the list to accommodate a few alternates. However, only 16 winners were available at the appointed time so we made do with four 4-player games
Greg Thatcher had the highest score in the semifinals (45) over Dominic Blais (36) and Wade Campbell (35), with Perrianne Lurie (27) not able to get things going. Alex Bove also had a comfortable win over Aran Warszawski, Antony Saccenti and Warren Whitsitt (44, 36, 34, 29). The two other semifinal games saw Eric Freeman and Haim Hochboim barely lose their matches to Steve Spisak and Ron Clement, respectively. Eric’s two-point loss gained sixth-place laurels, while Haim’s one-point defeat earned fifth.
With Abydos, Amarna and Buto out of play, the Final proved interesting. The first round saw a very rare set and most on both sides of the Nile and several power cards being scored led to Ron and Steve sharing the lead at 18 points each. Greg made two power cards and a set giving him 12 points, while Alex rounded out the group with nine. Greg had a good money position heading into the second round, but Alex’s decision to push the sacrifice up to 2 (increasing points for Ron who was the only person to have temples and money for Steve who had the most farmers) gave Steve almost the same amount, so the second round became a chess match of province selection.
Ron continued to covet the temple spaces while Steve and Greg used their money advantages to take the larger pyramid spaces. Greg did take the Edu province that had a temple and two pyramids giving him a boost at the end and an off-set to Ron’s two temples in Damanhur. However in the end, the money and points Steve managed in the first round were enough to deny Greg…barely. The leaders were tied with 42 points, but Steve held the first tie-breaker (nine pyramids to eight). Ron and Alex also tied for third with 36 points. Alex needed two tie-breakers (nine farmers and temples to Ron’s seven) to take the bronze.
