Chairman Wins Another Among 50% Increase In Lemming Owners

The 7th running of the Lemmings was a very good year. We had an excellent turnout with 42 players trying their best to impress the judges with their Lemming’s spectacular ability to dive to their doom! Over 4 heats there were eighteen 4 player games and a single 5 player game.

The field included what must be a record number of new players along with the usual wily veterans. Leaping Lemmings is a ‘coached’ tournament and again showed how easy it is to pick up. Two new players, who were literally taught how to play in the 15 minutes leading up to round 1, won their heat. One of them made the semifinals, losing that game by 2 points!

Twelve players made it into the 3 semifinal games. Many were veterans but there were a few newer players as well. The games were all close with 3 points separating 1st from 3rd in all 3 games. The games were also ‘friendly’ affairs with an average of 11 jumps against only 7 in the chow pile. For the tournament as a whole, there was an average of 12 jumps and 10 in the chow pile.

Three veterans survived the semis to make the final table: Andy Lewis, Forrest Speck, and GM Bill Powers. Unlike the rather ‘friendly’ semifinal games, this would be a brutal affair. After Andy made an early ‘tactical’ error, Forrest took the early lead. Bill’s Lemmings were apparently covered in a special sauce that attracted eagles. Ruby and Stephen Jr ultimately gulped down 6 of the Red Clan. Coming into the end game, Forrest still had the lead but Andy had been a pellet magnet. A stack of 6 pellets stood before him. On a late jump, Andy could have used a ‘favor’ pellet to increase his score. When he did not, Forrest and Bill both smelled defeat. Those 6 pellets were worth 8 victory points pushing Andy to victory!

The final tally was:

  • Andy – 22VP – 2 Jumps – 3 in the Chow
  • Forrest – 15VP – 3 Jumps – 4 in the Chow
  • Bill – 8VP – 1 Jump – 6 in the Chow

It was a great tournament. Many thanks to all who participated and we hope to see everyone again in 2018!
