Throughing Caution and Safety To the Wind

The 2017 WBC Tin Goose event featured 25 players trying their hands at running fledgling airlines in the early days of aviation. It also featured a large bunch of really outstanding additional prizes supplied by designer Matt Calkins. Thank you Matt!

This year’s event used the base rules for all rounds, two heats, semifinals and final, and used a variant of the system developed by John Coussis for Atlantic Storm to get players seated and playing as fast as possible. Both worked well and will be used next year.

The early rounds featured a mix of really close games, one was decided by a single dollar, and some blowouts. One common theme was players throwing caution to the winds and equipping their airlines with less safe planes remember this when we discuss the Final.

When the dust settled, the 2017 Champion was designer Matt Calkins with 386 dollars. Right on his heels was Anthony Lainesse with 382 dollars, followed by Nicholas Pei with 285 dollars, and Francois de Bellefeuille with 257 dollars. Matt graciously gave the grand prize of an exquisite large scale model of an early model seaplane to our second place finisher, content himself with the BPA plaque.

I would like to thank John Keating for serving as one of my Assistants, helping with sign in and such. And of course Matt Calkins deserves a round of applause as he not only ran the Demo session he provided the superb extra prizes in the event. Together they were a big reason this event occurred and ran fairly smoothly. Looking forward to 2018!
