This was my first year as a GM, and if I had known it was this much fun, I’d have volunteered years ago. Not that there were no challenges – folks, you need to bring a copy of the game if you want to be assured of playing. You say you’re flying? No problem – leave the huge box at home and just bring the board and pieces.

The Mulligan round 1 on the First Saturday saw just 10 people participate because only 5 people brought the game. We could have had 16 players if 3 more had brought games.

By contrast, we had 38 show up to play in round 1 on the 2nd Saturday, with the start delayed for a bit while one participant went and tracked down his roommate’s copy of Battle Cry so we could have 19 boards. Did I mention bringing a copy of the game? Among these 38 players were eight previous Battle Cry champions, plus many laurelists from past years. 19 boards gave us 19 winners who were joined by 3 Mulligan Round winners for round 2.

The winnowing process began, until we were down to 6 players, which gave us our 6 laurelists, even though there was only one plaque. Players who dislike only one plaque should encourage others to play, let’s get those numbers up and make Battle Cry a Century 100 event again.

Six laurelists became 3 semifinalists, Joe Harrison, Steve Lollis and Jon Manley. Yours Truly had to step in as an eliminator as Joe had defeated me way back in round 2. I played Steve, while Joe and Jon squared off. The scenario was Shiloh, which I had originally intended to be the Final game and it would have been if I had done my job as eliminator. But Steve played an inspired game as the Confederates, using the cover of the woods better than I have ever seen anyone do. He won 6-5 after running one of my artillery units off the board for the final flag.

Meanwhile Joe and Jon played a game of attrition and cautious movement that reached a 5-5 stalemate. Then Jon’s Union troops advanced on their left to pressure weakened Confederate units while other Confederate units advanced on the weakened Union right, racing for the baseline. Joe’s Confederates won the race by playing a Forced March, reaching a baseline hex to win the game 6-5.

The final battle, featured two previous Battle Cry champions, Joe Harrison, who won in 2015, and Steve Lollis, the 2009 winner.

The scenario was Glorieta Pass, the key battle of the New Mexico campaign, called by some the “Gettysburg of the West.” Joe bid 2 card discards to play the Confederates, who won a tactical victory in the real battle, and started with an attack from his left, positioning artillery to rake the Union lines and eventually taking out 2 Infantry. But the Union retaliated, taking out a Confederate Artillery unit with just 5 shots and then vaporizing a Rebel Cavalry unit, hitting on all 3 of 3 “seeing eye” dice, as the players described them. Joe’s Rebels eliminated another Union infantry unit, but the Union then charged the center, destroying a Confederate infantry unit with perfect 3 for 3 shooting! again. The coup de grâce came shortly thereafter when the Union cavalry, aided by the battle cry card, trapped and eliminated the last Confederate cavalry unit, giving Steve the win, 5-3.

With his victory, Steve Lollis becomes only the second player to have won the BCY championship more than once, joining 3-time BCY champion Jeff Cornett in that distinction.

I can hardly wait for next year!
