Following a brief absence, Conflict of Heroes returned to the WBC in 2018. Unfortunately the turnout was very low this year, consisting of only six players. Almost all the players were familiar with the game. Being scheduled opposite two other popular World War II scenario-based tactical games probably contributed to the disappointing attendance number. Another factor may have been the lack of a recent release in the Conflict of Heroes line. The much-anticipated second edition of Storms of Steel was not available in time for the WBC. This release includes new rules that, while compatible with all previous CoH sets, streamlines and simplifies the game and presents players with new challenges.
Previous multi-time CoH WBC champion Josh Coyle returned to claim another title, defeating Eric Tolentino in a fast paced final match. The final was played using a scenario from the latest Conflict of Heroes game, Guadalcanal. The addition of the Japanese Army to the Conflict of Heroes world provided interesting new opportunities for players. With four sets available for Conflict of Heroes, the plan was for each round to utilize a scenario from a different set. Due to the low turnout, this didn’t happen. Hopefully, with the release of Storms of Steel Second Edition Conflict of Heroes will see renewed interest and perhaps return to the WBC with a larger field of players.
